What you use as background...
Have seen some nice posed shots of watches.I'm curious, where do you normally shoot these pics ?? Any place you would usually pose your watches on or near ??
To get my moody grey shots, I'll use this old slingbag flap as a background.I think the dark greyish colours sets off the SS bracelets quite nicely. What about the rest ??? Cheers.Peter. |

I use the inside of a white plastic waste basket. It adds a nice glow and diffuses the light effectively.

I take most of my pix right outside my front door next to a small tree. The green seems to contrast well with black, SS and gold.
example.

My recent shots have been on my computer desk just because I'm too lazy to actually find a better background.

As for me, I just use my laptop bag. The black leather provides for a nice backdrop.
...or this,

Nothing fancy. I take photos on a table near a window. I drape the table with an American flag and other objects. For some reason, Old Glory makes 904L steel glow.

Actually you can use any kind of background as long as you focus the subject well.

I consider my watch photography skills to be a work in progress.
Sometimes I like to use classic Rolex ads that are pertinent to the watch: Or shoot outside in natural light: Sometimes I prefer to use a telephoto and blur the background: I am not happy with my indoor macro skills yet, so I don't use the light box much:

The majority of my backgrounds are table placemats. I also use pens (that I have turned) and custom knives for props. I enjoy taking photos and every now and then get a pretty good shot.

I really like this thread.
I've always been a fan of gun photographer Ichiro Nagata. No matter the background his photos are striking. His use of contrast in his compositions gives photos life. Also an amateur photographer friend told me that great photos tell stories (Iwo Jima flag raising for example). The best images can be slightly out of focus, an accident. What matters is if the image conveys something. I'm still working at it. My Nagata hommage and the obligatory Rolex shot. |
