True Story: The event that got the folks at Westboro Baptist started was going to the public park across the street from their church and protesting against people (apparently mostly gay males) who were using the park for public sex. Reacting to the local police's refusal to police the park, they made signs warning parents that the park was used for gay sex. The world's reaction to what they did sparked them to become even more radical, until now they make it their business to protest funerals for US soldiers.
