New Hakase Buffalo Horn FP

I just wanted to share with you guys my new Hakase fountain pen made from Water Buffalo Horn. Located on the west coast of Japan (Tottori, Tottori Prefecture), Hakase is a small family-owned shop that has been producing hand-turned high-end custom fountain pens since 1934. (See video.) Only one pen is made each day!

I ordered this pen in March and was lucky enough to receive it yesterday. Only a seven-month wait this time! Previously, the wait time could be as long as two years!

Metal trim is all solid 14K gold - including the clip, roll stopper, and section ring. The #15 nib is made by Pilot and writes very smooth. Hakase certainly know how to tune a nib so that it glides on paper. At the same time, there is just a tiny bit of feedback that allows the user to control where the nib is going. As for the pen body, it fits perfectly into my hand like a glove. I specified the lengths seen in the order form below and the dimensions match exactly. This is an amazing pen. I highly recommend it if you want a high-end pen and want to go beyond Montblanc/Cartier/Dunhill/Sailor/Montegrappa/OMAS etc. I previously owned a Cocobolo Hakase which has since been sold to a collector in Texas.

Enough of words, onto the pictures.

I like that. Are they +/- Mont Blanc prices?

Thanks! I specified a medium-fine nib and it writes very well on all papers I've tried so far, e.g. Kokuyo Campus, Clairefontaine, HP 32 lb Premium. I've been using Iroshizuku Tsuki-Yo ink in it so far. The pen-maker and third-generation owner Ryo Yamamoto likes to tune his nibs to write slightly wet, which is also how I like my nibs to write.

Thanks! The pens are indeed +/- Montblanc prices, depending on which Montblanc you decide to compare against. This particular piece would cost as much as a Hemingway in excellent condition. Definitely triple that of a new 149. Replacing the solid gold hardware with gold-plated versions will reduce the price by quite a lot.

Yes, it is. The nib/feed/filling system in Hakase pens are made by Pilot.
