My buddy inherited an old bubble back
Hi my buddy's grand dad passed this down to him. It looks like dial was refinished? Serial is 300,000 range. Is it from 40's? Thanks

Yes, the dial is an older refinish. Crown is possibly a non-Rolex replacement.

But it's been overhauled and "restored" and so more research would need to be done beside a couple of pictures..

Were the numerals originally lume, and said lume plots were later cut out when dial was refinished? His granddad was in WWII...if he bought it at a PX, would there be any type of inscription as such inside caseback?

My Datejust was originally bought at a base exchange, although in 1966, and there's nothing relevant inscribed anywhere.

Technically not really considered a bubble back because...the back is flat and not extruded out toward the bottom of the watch to house the automatic mechanism...because it's manual wind.
Calibre 710. The dials were made with recesses for the radium to hold more of it for brighter luminosity. Lume is often either not applied as heavily in a refinish situation or it simply has fallen out. |
