Hello everybody,

I wanted to start a thread where all Glashutte Original fans, admirers, and owners could share pictures, opinions, and thoughts on this exquisite manufacture.

I will start with photographs of my PanoMaticLunar, reference 1-90-02-42-32-05 , silver dial. This is my first and only GO and I love it for its dial configuration, size, and movement decorations.

I have a flat wrist that can accommodate 42-44 mm watches (sorry never measured the circumference). The PML is a thick watch and it works great with my style. I have used it with a suit and, although it tends to peek out from the cuff it works for me.

Maybe a German forum to go with the other non-Rolex would be cool.

As far as thickness most German watches are thinker because they build their movements with plates both front and back.

Thank you for your contribution. I suspect PML and PanoReserve will be heavily represented in this thread (Jocke, where are you!?) but I hope to see also a lot of 70s and perhaps some more special pieces...

Regarding the older pieces, can you elaborate a bit more on their history? These are from the Soviet time I take. How did it work then? Everything was done in the town of Glashutte? Do these pieces bear a specific significance with respect to Glashutte Original history?

Glashütte The Story

The story behind Glashüttes watchmaking begins in 1845 when Ferdinand Adolph Lange was awarded a state loan and was
able to establish Glashütte watch factory. He took advantage of his master Ernest Kasiske, Ludwig Strasser and Ludwig Strasser,
who all joined the company.

After Ferdinand Adolph Lange's death in 1875, founded the Deutsche Uhrmacherschule Moritz Grossman, who was also connected
to Glashütte. This led to Glashüttes goodwill and reputation grew. Man had now made known Glashütte as a manufacturer of high
quality and traditional, yet innovative, mechanical watches.

Glashütte realized that the exclusive watches produced were not available economically to a wider audience. Therefore, established
by John Glashütte Dürrstein 1893 Glashütter Uhrenfabrik union. This meant that it could now produce less expensive Glashütte watches
not containing precious metals, but still kept the high quality Glashütte was known for.

From these schools came several watchmakers to occur in the same area as Glashütte and many of these were working together in
different configurations. Name Glashütte Original was first used in 1921. During World War II classified Glashüttes watch manufacturers
as part of the war industry, and after the war expropriated many manufacturers and their factories of the Soviet part of war reparations.

New economic and political realities led to most manufacturers Glashütte area in 1951 formed the conglomerate VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe.
The German reunification in 1990 led to Glashütte Original could regain its old factories and its position as a reputed manufacturer. The release
of Karree series Glashütte Original's rectangular watch, marked the relaunch of Glashütte Original as one of the world's leading watchmaker.

The company VEB Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe renamed Glashütter Uhrenbetriebe GmbH. Other companies in Glashütte area remained independent
manufacturers: Lange & Sohne, Glashütte Original, Union Glashütte, Nomos and Glashütte SA & Moritz Grossman.

What I do not understand regarding the Soviet time is whether the different brands (GO, Lange, Mhule, etc) still had an independent production or not. Are there watches from the 70s with "Lange" on the dial?

No, they were resurrected in the early 90s.

There was a lot of constulations in Glashütte between the WW2 and to the Wall fell so I can't answer exactly your question.
I believe they start using the name Glashütte Original in 1994.

I believe is was 1994 the start to deliver wristwatches.

Mmmhhh, now I am getting interested in this matter. I will do more research and update the thread when I gather enough info.
What I am after is how the business was run under the Soviets. Were all the local shops making watches under one name? Were they each doing only one part of the watch?

DavidSW has one for sale and I have been eyeing it... I am not in the market now but it remains a very attractive piece.

The new Senator Chronometer in blue is another great reference. Although quite unique, I suspect many people will go for other timepieces once they get to that price range. But that is true for any GO in precious metal.

Does anyone have experience buying (or getting a quote) in GO Boutiques? I'm planning to visit a place soon where there's a GO Boutique, and wondering where GO stands on the watch boutique scale. Do they have strict 0% discount policy like Omega Boutiques, or negotiations work like with regular GO ADs? (like how AP Boutiques worked a few years ago) I'm not sure what to expect in the GO Boutique, but in the same town GO withdrew from all regular GO ADs, so my only chance is to go to the boutique. BTW, I'd be shopping for a Seventies Panorama Date, so I'm not looking for a boutique-exclusive piece. Any insights would be hugely appreciated

I have not been to a GO boutique, but Swatch boutiques that carry GO seem to be less than enthusiastic about discounts. I have not negotiated, though, as I already have a watch. I base my thoughts on the overall conversations about pricing.

Congrats on your GO 70s choice. If you plan to change straps or go from a bracelet to a strap, be prepared to either take the watch to a knowledgeable AD or buy a special tool that allows you to remove friction based pins. You do not want to hammer those out.
