What do you think of these modified watches...black SUB and GMT

I've seen the black modified Daytona's but its the first time i've seen a Sub and GMT. They're from a UK company called Pro Hunter: http://www.discoverprohunter.com/

Personally I don't like them myself but I wonder if Rolex can do anything to stop this and other companies from modifying their watch and still call them Rolex. I have read that some auto manufacturers have successfully sued companies that modify their cars to prevent them from calling by their original names. I will try to find out who and post later.

I like them as Rolex make them.

I think it's a shame that anyone would ruin such lovely watches, so it's a from me, I'm afraid.

Rolex will not service them, so when you need parts, your going to have problems.

I like the black look of it, but the "Pro Hunter" emblazoned on the dial is as tacky as Omega's dial modification for their 007 watch.

I would rather buy a Doxa in black, straight from the manufacturer.

I've also seen some pics of the Prohunter Daytonas where the bakelite bezel had cracked.

Every once in a while the prohunter people come here and post up their stuff to get free advertising.

Don't even get me started on the rip-off price.

Only if you go to an RSC right? This does not seem to be a problem for the many forum folks who go to independents and have marvelous success.

I don't think they are bad looking. There are a couple of recent threads on the Military Watch Resource that show PVD work done on a sub. Looks pretty good.

Right, but independants still have to follow RUSA policy on working on watches with aftermarket parts. In addition, some parts will not be sent to the independants and have to be sent to an RSC, my local guy told me this. Regardless, it's not worth the hassle IMO.

Their products surface here every few months and the reaction (above) is pretty much always the same. Don't look good enough to me that I'd accept the loss of RSCs in the process and lose access to the best place to keep my watch in good shape.

Re visiting this thread, I can understand why some would be upset with these models (prohunter, etc.). I'm not a big fan of some company making their own modifications to these watches, however, If someone decides to mod their watch on their own (realizing the effects on resale, authorized servicing, etc.), then I think it's fine. I have seen examples of some Rolex' modified/altered by their owners with different crystals (minus the cyclops), and PVD treatment, and to a lesser extent, changing of the bracelets/straps. These mods have looked pretty good to me.

Changing a bracelet or a strap is not modifying a watch IMO, it' when you see permanent changes done to a watch that has me concerned....but you are correct, it is one's own watch to do with what they please.

John Mayer was wearing one on the cover of some magazine I saw at Borders this month.

I admit I do like them.
I would only do it if I had two of the watch I was doing it to.
I think it SUCKS that RUSA wont work on them.

I also this its ABSURD how much the company that sells them charges.
It would be MUCH cheaper to simply have your watch maker take everything
apart and then mail the case to a company that does DLC. I just sent off a
Rohrbaugh 9 mm (my pocket carry piece) to be done over in DLC. Its pretty
easy. My Ball Night Train is done in DLC

I like the look of the black finish, but they should have just made up a couple of homages. The Rolex name does look out of place in that context. Also, to add the Pro Hunter text onto the dial is a little tacky in my opinion.
