Rolex didnt say anything

When i sent my SD in for service the movement etc was estimated for repair. I noticed that my dial does not produce any lume whatsoever. It is Swiss T 25 type. The lume is set in little circles. Why the heck would they not check to see if the lume was working or not. Also any idea what new lume costs for these. The bezel was replaced and it lights up real good

Maybe Rolex considered that you might wish to keep your original dial. Tritium dials are quite collectable.

A new dial would be luminova and would probably cost you something like an additional $300.

I'm sure if at the time you handed over your watch for service you made a point of saying that the lume on your dial no longer works and wanted that rectified, Rolex would have had no problem in replacing the dial and charging you accordingly.

You have to tell them to replace it next time. But, I would keep the old dial if I were in the same situation.

Curious--how old is the watch? I saw elsewhere on this site that the tritium's half life is 12.3 years. So, presumably the lume is completely gone at 24.6 years. How long does it actually take to disappear?

I would keep the dial as well especially if you don't have any WG surrounding the markers.

The way it works is after 24.6 yr, it has 1/2 of the tritium when it was 12.3 yr old, ie, 1/4 of original tritium. as the radioactivity goes down, it cannot excite the phosphor any longer and it becomes much dimmer.

Isn't it 1/2 X 1/2 so after 24.6 years you still have .25 left?
How much does moving it from light to dark to light affect it?

Cheers

Moving from light to dark to light does not affect the tritium, since it provides its own lume. If you go from light to dark, however, you may get lume for a couple of minutes. This is the phosphorescent component, not the tritium component.

I don't know the answer to your first question, except that in real life there is no visible lume a lot sooner than 24.6 years.

I have a TT daytona "U" ( 1997 ) with the tritium dial and I get NO lume unless I use a black light and it only glows while the black light is on it....
