Upmost thanks to TRF, you did good.

I just wanted to post a quick thank you to everyone who frequents this forum with regularity, without your wisdom I could not be as happy as am I today. (And if you’re just here for the thanks skip to the last paragraph because I’m going to rabble a bit first.)

I’ve owned one watch for a very long time, a Tag Heuer my dad bought for me on my 13th birthday (more on that later.)

For a long time I thought “good” watches were crazy expensive, shiny things that I would never be able to understand, but over time and lots of research I started to understand them for what they are.
Ingenious works of technology that should be cherished and loved (and worn and used) as the tools that they are, not something to be bought and hidden away.

The more time I’ve spend looking at your posts the more I’ve come to realise the these things are treasures to be worn and used, so after many other ‘toy’ watches (and I mean that affectionately, like the Tag Heuer Monaco I loved dearly) I decided to buy my first Rolex.

A 2006 Explorer, that was fantastic.
As soon as I put it on it was like an awakening. For the first time all those other watches I’d been wearing were like toys and this felt like a ‘real’ watch. The kind of feeling I’d had when I first put on that watch my dad had bought me all those years ago..

Anyway, this brings me to my point.

The last time I took in my Tag to be serviced at the AD they told me not to bother bringing in again as Tag had said this would be the last time they’d have parts for it.. devastating for me because it’ll be 30 years on my wrist this year hence deciding (debatably 15 years too long) to get a newer watch.

I decided I wanted a watch like my Tag. Not a Tag necessarily, but a watch that would last me at least 30 years like it had.
I had the Explorer and decided to trade it and upgrade to a new(er) Rolex that’d do the job.

Enter my new favourite thing in all the world. My third ‘child’ (because let’s face it, it’d cost as much as kid does up until it’s 8 years old!)

I got my all time dream watch and have never been happier in my life, I love this thing like life itself and without you guys I would never have thought of a Rolex or changed my perception of the brand.
On both counts I’m immeasurable happy I did and I just wanted to say thank you.
(And hey, if it’s good enough for Robert Redford, it’s more than good enough for me.)

I’m not saying this will be the last watch I’ll ever buy, but it’ll definitely be the last watch I ever own.

Oh, and I’m wearing it everyday and it’s going to be part of my life. It’s definitely not going to be saved for special occasions or the odd night out because I love it too much to take it off. It’s going to live my life with me forever now, and think it wants it like that.

Thanks to you, one and all.

Ps. Now I’ve taken the photos to put on with this post, am I crazy or are there certain similarities between them? Was I always destined to get this watch...??

Thank you, I intent to wear the hell out of it and enjoy test the theory of longevity! :)

It’s already got its first stretches so the hard part is done.

Fantastic. A watch that will last you a lifetime and much more. You have a piece of real history on your arm.

Thank you kindly.

I’ve loved looking at the history (especially the date vs no date debate, my reasoning was if this is going to be my only watch I’d like a date) and am so happy I got it. I first saw it on Robert Redfords wrist in ‘All the presidents men’ and have liked it ever since. My 6 year old has already asked if she can have when I’m gone!

Congrats! Looks great. You got many years out of the tag and I’m sure you will do the same with the rolex!

I suspect one of your children will grow up and one day post about that lovely watch on this very forum! Salute!
