Thanks JJ great link. Now when it's time for me to finally get the Rolex I can print that out and tell the dealer I want it for the wholesale price right then and now. Or else. That chart really shows how bad you're getting ripped off. P.S. The dealers probably pay less then wholesale. They just don't want you to know it.

However old the prices are, bloody hell still a great profit margin.Don't you feel sorry for the poor old AD ,when he offers you a 5% discount
on certain models.

You almost feel like you're taking money out of his pocket and food out of his family's mouths. You just want to say, Oh, no, keep the discount and feed your family. RIGHT!!

I must disagree with your contention. You may be unaware of the costs involved in owning and running a profitable business. Things like salary, rent/mortgage, taxes, utilities, insurance, return on your investment and numerous miscellaneous expenses all have to come out of what might appear to be a large margin. Believe me, those dollars disappear VERY quickly and often result on pennies in the pocket of the AD. Additionally, I have yet to see a line forming outside a store to grab up these $10k - 20k watches as fast as they come in the back. We're not talking bread and milk here. Quite honestly, if it were not for some of the fashion merchandise and impulse buying I don't know how the ADs would stay in business. This would not be a good investment or a means to quick wealth. I believe Be Kind to ADs Week is coming up soon. |

Spoken like a true capitalist, Richard.
I agree with you up to a point. For high end jewlelry houses, I think the AD pockets more than a few pennies. But I do agree that there is a lot of overhead that goes into the retail price. However, as to your comment that "I have yet to see a line forming outside a store to grab up these $10k - 20k watches as fast as they come in the back," have you ever been to the Louis Vuitton shop in Paris. First you have to fight your way in to the place, and then you watch as the bags, wallets, etc., literally fly off the shelves. You would think they were giving the stuff away, when in reality, the bags, etc. are going for four figures and up. Don't you think they are raking in the profits there? Better believe it.

Maybe I'm just reading this "dated" price list wrong, but to me the wholesale price is not what the dealer buys the watch for from Rolex; it is actually what the used value of a watch is.
Dealers are provided with booklets that give them wholesale prices for used watches, much like used car managers, so they know how much to offer someone who is trading in an old Rolex for a new one. I don't think the price list that a dealer pays for a new Rolex is as easily obtainable especially from the internet. |

Thanks JJ, I have seen that site and those prices are at fairly old. The rule of thumb on Jewel is that it doubles (at least) in price every time it changes hands. =) maverick

I'm not sure I understand the benefit of a price-list from sometime in the past, in an unknown currency. With "current" prices for both the 16520 and the 116520, it's even dubious as a historical document.
