Past or Recent Rolex Horror stories

How about it, anyone with a horror story due to the purchase or repair of their Rolex?

I took my TT DJ in for service at my local watch guy, he was going to service, replace repair as needed my older 1675. Change the bezel and insert, oops took longer then I expected and lo and behold he could not find the cosmetic parts, bezel and insert for my watch! I had it on a winder after getting it back only to wear it and find it looses 10 minutes in 24hours! I'm sure the oils are well distributed and it seems to be going crazy!

I have two mottos: Exercise is bad for your health; and servicing is bad for your watch. If you don't have it serviced, you won't have those problems, Earl.

As for my horror story, it involved an early attempt to purchase a YG OQ DD on fleabay. I lost the bidding, but got a "second chance" offer e-mail. Being a relative newbie at that business, I assumed the offer was on the up and up. After some discussion, I sent a wire transfer to the "seller's" account. Two days later when I hadn't heard from him, I sent an inquiry to the real seller. I learned the sad truth that I had been scammed. I was out $4200. I chalked it up to a very expensive learning experience.

About 8 months later I got a call from a police detective in a small town in Missouri. The same guy had scammed someone else. Apparently he got careless and was caught. To make a long story short, about 4 months later, I received a check in the mail for $4200.

So fortunately, my horror story had a happy ending. And I am a lot wiser now when it comes to dealing on fleabay.

Only ONE horror story....ever with the 17 Rollies I've owned.

The year? 1992. The watch? Rolex SS Sub-date. The horror? Walked up to one of those spring-loaded, swing-back doors...pushed it violently open (as that damn spring is always very hard!), didn't know that the spring had been take off for servicing.....door went back with my violent shove, bounced off the door stop and sprang right back at me.

I instinctively put up my hand and....SMACK....crystal on the Sub chipped.

That's the only HORROR story I've ever had in over 25 years of Rolex ownership!! I am careful, you know! Very careful!!

It must have been 11 months after the purchase of my 16610. We had a big problem with our (then) TokenRing network, connections between two patch cabinets kept dropping. I had to go to the basement of the main building and in my haste a banged the watch against a solid steel door post. The horror! Heavy ding in the bezel, damaged insert, ugly chipped crystal. I could hardly contain my tears. The repair bill was also huge and I never wore the watch to work again because of Anne. (She made me promise this, and I kept it).

I had my first Rolex when I was in college in 1970. I wore it all the time, but I went to get a new air filter for my car. I took the watch off, set it on the fender, put in the new air filter and drove away!

When I got home I realized that I had lost my watch! I quickly drove back to the spot and found it in the street. It looked like it had been run over. The bracelet was mangled and the crystal smashed. I took it to NYC ( I was in NJ) to a shop in Rocefeller Plaza by the skating rink. It was either a dealer or RSC at the time, I don't remember.

I got it back with a repair bill of $55, which was about 50% of what I had paid for the watch. I remember it as an "oyster perpetual." I don't remember the size or if it had a date.

I traded it a few years later for a handgun at a pawn shop. I still have the gun, but wish I had the Rolex instead.
