Difference in Lug Size/Shape
Hello everyone!
I had a quick question. I’ve always wondered this, but is there a slight difference in the lug sizes between the crown or non-crown side? Or upper or lower? Do some of them flare out more than others? Or less/more sharp than others ar the corners? Is there a very slight discrepancy from one watch to the next? I own a new sub and feel like there is a very slight difference, but it could be lighting? Just wanted to hear your thoughts. Thanks! Thanks! |

The lugs on the crown side have always been slightly thinner on Rolex watches with crown guards, to give an overall look of symmetry or balance.

Exactly that and have been so for the past 40 plus years on most all of the sports line up.

My 116610 looks symmetrical to me.. the only watch I can see that has an obvious difference is the Daytona.

There can also be variation between watches. I bought a used watch once that I noticed after a few days had a single thicker lug at the bottom left hand corner. I also had a service mid-case replaced as part of a rather extensive repair on another watch with the exact same issue on the same lug. It was replaced again without any objection from Rolex after I had pointed it out. |

Oh very interesting. I never knew there could be a slight variation even within the same watch.

I know that used to be the case (no pun intended) but the 6 digits (SS & YG/Oyster Daytona excepted) look perfectly symmetrical to me?

Funny that this is mentioned - I’m a newbie to Rolex and without knowing almost nothing of difference in models, this is something that’s been playing my mind. Sometimes, when looking at my DJ in different angles and lights, it’s like my lug, right/down side seems thinner than left side. But Datejust models are symmetric or what??
Thanks in advance :) Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

As mentioned above this very scenario has occurred(twice) and I might add within a reasonably short period of time. This issue has been discussed on this forum before and if I recall correctly someone else has posted a pic of a watch from around the same era with its original unpolished case and there was a discrepancy between the width of the bottom two lugs that was not evident on the upper lugs. Does your watch have it's original case? If so then when was the watch made(approximately)? And or has it ever been changed to the best of your knowledge(when)? I have a theory that there may have been a given period where this randomly occurred at the factory. In essence the cases slipped through QC. |

OK, let's see some images of modern Rolex models (aside from non-PM Daytonas - ha!) where the lugs aren't the same width and shape/symmetry. Not likely.
I have a feeling Adam and Peter are just messing with us plebes. |

Eyeballing this Sub two liner (no date) ref. 14060 from around mid ‘90. On sale in a non AD boutique.
It looks like the watch have smaller lugs crown side. Is that because it’s one of those ref. that falls under the category in this tropic? Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

Amongst all Daytona, I believe only the PT and WG ones have even lugs

Perhaps people are talking two different things. The lugs on the crown side start the same width at the bracelet outside edge. The back side lugs have a slightly larger angle as it blends into the case; the crown side has a shallower angle then flares out to make the crown-guards. This makes the crown-side lugs narrower at the root/case.

Thanks Tools - because that’s what this Submariner looks like. I was first thinking that the lugs maybe was polished down. But now it makes sense. Have a great weekend. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |
