Which do I keep?

Hi All

I've been wanting to reduce my collection down to a manageable 10 watches. I currently have two Rolex Explorers, a black V serial (2009) and a 42mm Polar Explorer. I'd like to sell one to fund either a Reverso Tribute Small Seconds or a blue Yachtmaster 40.

I love both Explorers for different reasons. I actually prefer the smaller size and overall aesthetics of the 16570. It's also the more accurate of the two at +/- 1 second per day.

I really love the casual versatility of the polar, with its white dial and orange GMT hand. However, if I'm honest, I wish it were slightly smaller and usually wear it on a Nato. (I commute on a motorcycle and my larger watches are less comfortable under gloves). That said, I tend to wear my polar more often due to the casual nature of my work.

I had originally decided to sell my black Explorer only because I have too many black dial watches in my collection, and my nephew, who will eventually inherit my collection, prefers the larger polar. However, upon speaking to some dealers yesterday, they suggested that keeping the "V" series would be a better "investment".

I don't buy for investment. I've realised that I'm more of a watch enthusiast rather than a "collector" and like to wear my watches as part of my lifestyle. I'd love to keep both but I'd like my collection to have a good spread of genres, complications and colours.

Which Explorer would you learned gentlemen keep? Have any of you regretted selling one over the other? Thanks in advance for your replies.

Ben

I think you answered your own question
The V serial Explorer is your keeper

I would prefer the polar but it’s only your opinion that matters here!

I had the newer white Exp II and regret greatly parting with it. It was a foolish move on my part.

Time to say goodbye to the newer polar exp. Too big all around.

Ben

You will regret selling either. Don't sell, everyone regrets selling, especially Rolex. Sell one of the other 8 if you really have to. Otherwise buy what you love and keep them.

Great advice. I’d sell every beater before my core pieces.

I had the 42mm polar. I ended up parting ways with it. Too big and too much pop, for me. I don’t regret selling it.

I would sell the EXP 42mm and get the Reverso tribute SS (assuming your wrist is not huge because that's 27.5mm wide).

I'm beginning to appreciate the utility and comfort of smaller watches, which has been one of the reasons I love the 16570.

Thanks for all your input, gentleman. All of you represent the different voices in my head.

As irrational as it sounds, I find myself feeling guilty choosing one Rolex GMT over the other - another reason for reducing my collection. I think the difficulty of letting go of these (or any) watches are the attached memories each watch elicits.

Perhaps I'll sit on this a while longer. Thanks, again.
