Wrote this summary of why I went with the black dial on another watch forum:

1) beautiful matte dial that has different tones/effects depending on lighting. The white is clean and refreshing, but has the possible downside of being more monotone and stark.

2)the white gold super-Maxi hands on the black model (which only have paint at their base) are beautiful and really catch the light due to their large size. Classy, subtly eye-catching, and incredibly legible against the matte background, particularly when darkness falls; just turn the watch at any angle and you don't even really need the (awesome) blue lume to see the time...the hands themselves just catch so much ambient light.

3)Orange hand & "Explorer II" legend look incredible against the dark dial---really pops, moreso than on the white background.

4) Black dial gives the illusion of wearing slightly smaller due to the deceptive slimming aspect of the darker color dial. The watch has plenty of presence regardless, so the black worked better for me in this way.

Believe me, either color is a good one as both dials work great for the watch. I had to see both together to clarify it for me---even then, I could've gone the other way and been perfectly fine with it. Still, I feel I made the right choice for me. YMMV.

An amazing response to a difficult question.

The bezel looks pretty much like it's predecessor and or even perhaps back to the 1655, which is one of the most desired and sought after Rolex explorers to date.
The 216570 is a modern day master piece in either black or white. IMO

+1! The bezel should cost reasonable to replace should the need arise. Reasonable compared to the ceramic gmt/sub at least.. Best tool watch overall sans the twinlock instead of triplock crown..
