Much like one of the previous posters, I'd been looking at a Rolex for a while.
Having never worn a watch and having tiny wrists I'd disregarded the larger models and, wanting something fairly discrete without cyclops, I'd pretty much settled on an Air-King. On the way to purchasing said Air-King, I was walking past a jewellers just down the street from the AD when I noticed a few second hand watches in the window, one of which immediately caught my eye. I now know it was an Explorer 114270!! I went in for a closer look, but they were asking top dollar for it and the finances didn't stack up. I carried on down to the AD, now having second thoughts about the Air-King, and there in the window was an Explorer 214270. I'd never really noticed it before, online or in the flesh, but 20 minutes later I was walking out of the AD with it on my wrist - and I couldn't be happier!!! Funny how things work out |

This thread was started way back in 2011; glad to see it's still being updated three years on. Perhaps it's a testament to the Explorer itself--a true classic that continues to find new fans with each passing year. I'm definitely in the club; here's my 114270.

The Explorer 39mm is the perfect watch for all occasions.
Whether it’s to a party, up the mountain, supermarket, black tie dinner, or even sadly to a funeral. Why? Because it’s under the radar, not too large and is not ostentatious. It suits my needs 24/7! It is a beautiful watch for sure and very pleased I bought mine some 18 months ago! |

The short hands aside, (I really don't find that a big deal but I think it's more evident in pictures than real time) how is the performance of the newer 214270 vs the classic. You hear about the newer movement with components designed to keep better time etc. Better bracelet for sure but why not the same clasp as the sub c?
Anyway, what does everyone think? |

Can't speak to a comparison of the 214270 with the classic but can share a graph of its accuracy for over a months time. As you can see that on many days it gained a second and then with proper positioning at night, it lost it.

Anyone know where to buy this NATO strap from earlier in the thread?
http://www.rolexforums.com/showpost....4&postcount=29 The way its threaded (including the black/darker one version of the strap OP posted) is not something I've seen before. And I have dozens of NATO straps! Cheers! |

It's called WatchTracker. The design hasn't been updated for iOS 7 so looks out dated but will work on iOS 7.

I've had it for three weeks and still smile every time I look at it, which is all the time since I wear it everyday.

Cool this one is my first 114270. I believe it was the one that was on hold from Neil you were talking about as I got it from him last week, so glad you found one as well. I'm loving the 114270, just curious and to why you flipped the other two and what brought you back. I'm loving to simplicity and elegance. The 16570 was just too big and clunky for my taste. I'm happier with the 36mm.

The first I traded for a Mark XV and the second I sold to get a white Arabic Air-King. I love the Air-King and now with this Explorer I hope to be done for awhile. The smaller sizes just work for me.
