The irony of this situation is, you are wearing a watch that probably trades below retail, whereas his watch currently sells for multiples of retail.

And he is the one chastising you for buying into hype? That's hilarious!

He tried to take the high ground, but didn’t realise he was more guilty of his supposed hype crime than you. Some people make me laugh…

Just a random encounter with an idiot. We've all had it at one time or another. It wasn't really about the watch. Sounds like you took the bait.

Rolex bashing-hate

His behavior was rude, period. And your comment about his Audi was justified. You were defending yourself. You were not the aggressor. He deserved it.

Btw, I do like Audi. But it’s still a great comeback. Never let people walk all over you. Put them in their proper place.

I've had four very different Audi's and all have worked faultlessly over the years.

As for him, some people's opinions are better kept to themselves.

The whole story is bizarre, maybe he was hoping to gain a compliment on his AP, and bitter nobody cares or recognizes AP. Even more disappointing, is a man ridiculing a woman’s watch, it’s very poor form. Guy has a chip on his shoulder, I bet if he has a Lamborghini or Porsche he would have been a lot nicer.

Agreed. The whole "I'll bet I'm a better car tinkerer than you" fell flat for me.

The OP's response is to treat others the same way? I don't see the logic, sorry. Revenge might be a dish best served cold but it's never as satisfying as intended.

Warning: don't buy a Tudor, your ego wouldn't be able to handle it.

None of that conversation would phase me. In fact, I find it quite amusing. I bought my first Audi in 1999. And there’s been one in the car stable pretty much since then. Most of the last 10 years an S model. Around that same starting point I picked up my first decent watch. For the last 25 years a significant amount the collection has been Rolex. Simply not concerned with others view of my connections to brand through cars and watches.

I get what you’re saying, but I think sometimes, aggressors need to be put in their proper place. Clearly, it depends upon the circumstances, so there is no right or wrong answer.

But it’s always nice to see someone stand-up to someone like that. And it’s not just about Rolex or Audi. It could be about anything.

TBH, I think much of the bitterness about the brand these days- although what I'm seeing is on social media only and not real life- is due to the rich, spoiled crybabies who can't walk into the store and buy whatever they want. Kind of a spinoff on the whole 'sour grapes' thing.

However, that's social media, where civility and class have given way to...well, I'm not sure how to describe it other than say it gets uglier by the day. I just can't fathom denigrating someone's choice of watch- or car- in person.

Buy hey, I'm old too, and there's many days I feel like a stranger in this world and its customs.

I would definitely add a PP to my collection, they’re as difficult to get as Rolex. And they’re definitely a beautiful watch, one to own for a lifetime.

Pretty sure the guys was just jealous.

Interesting story. Though I would have just gone with the flow and said "I know, I think all watches that cost more than a $30 Casio are a hype. But I just can't resist the hype!" There is nothing that psychologically disarms more quickly than unexpected, self-deprecating humor.

I agree.

I also think it’s more about class (or lack thereof) and proper manners.

Who walks up to a stranger and criticizes their watch, shirt, shoes, haircut, whatever?

It’s rude.

I do find it interesting when strangers think it's ok to comment on someone's personal choices in real life, face to face.

I get it a lot with my dog, a wonderful French Bulldog, I love him dearly, and yet, I'm always astonished that people find the gall to tell me to to my face how ugly they think he is. "Oh my, he's so ugly isn't he?"

I usually think of some off-the-cuff remark commenting on their appearance, this usually shuts them right up.

That dude is someone who doesn’t know much about watches, though he thinks that he does. I have friends who own EVERYTHING, from very small production hand made extremely expensive watches to a plain sub.

They appreciate Rolex for what it is: a classic, well made, durable watch that just works, always, and holds or even appreciates in value. It holds its place 8n the watch world well. It doesn’t compete with a $600,000 watch and doesn’t need to
