Basically a rich guy is gonna buy it..
So why not make it scarce...and/or discontinue..
And double or triple the retail price over the years..maybe even more..
Knowing a rich guy..will pay it..whatever the price..
Good business strategy..
Buy up some stock..keep em in back until the right guy comes along..
Boom...sold..

Well now, that’s not exactly a PC. Ha. Maybe all Chronos rise. I noticed the 5170P has climbed steadily since I did cross shop that model against platona, and well, full platinum bracelet won out vs Diamond markers and display back for me at the time.

Back to OP, for me, the most non monetary valuable part I find about the Platona is it frees up mental space in the collection to start exploring new ways to build the collection. First because I found myself being less Rolex obsessed (what other Rolex can trump it? Not many IMHO) Second, I found myself being willing to explore watches that were not worth the value because it didn’t come with a bracelet for the same price.

I guess Platona price will stay stable for now and soar again when the watch is discontinued that could happen any time soon. This is the pinnacle of the modern Daytonas which is desired by many serious collectors or those with the means to purchase one. The Daytona hierarchy is quite clear: SS 116500 to YG/WG/RG to Platinum. I purchased my 116505 after having had the 116500 and have been considering trading in these two for the Platona if I could find a good offer.

I've actually been surprised that the vintage Daytonas have "seemed" to be relatively stable in comparison to the surge in modern pieces. Could pick up a 6263 for much less than a Platona right now.
You are right on the shiny new thing rocketing to the moon. If I decided I really wanted it, my play would be eventually acquiring it from my AD. Funny how MSRP is now a "good deal" when a few years ago discounts on many pieces, especially precious metals was the norm.

Run like hell man. Don't even consider paying that kind of money for a PM Rolex unless it's a RBOW or SARU.

Price may increase or decrease, but this latest craziness is without compare. Even dealers themselves are scratching their heads. A very nice dealer told me this morning that he was offered a BNIB 116506 at such a high price that even he said no, as he could never resell it and make anything, so that to me says the market is starting to push back a little.

No doubt! We discuss first world problems on this forum for sure.

I would like to actually feel and see the Platona in person. Never seen one.

Interesting thread.

In terms of money, the platona does present itself with a whole range of issues, of which I would hazard a guess the main one being what you're grappling with, OP.

In my own personal experience, once a watch starts approaching six figures, then it starts to become something other than what I signed up for in watch collecting in the first place.

Which seems to be applicable to more and more watches these days.

I think it's harder for long term collectors to play in the new realm of pricing because we remember the old pricing and easy availability.

I'd wait this one out for a bit. I don't think you need to let FOMO rush you into spending market price on this one...

Plus one. But to OP’s point, i also lusted for a Platona. Actually had one on my wrist a couple of years ago when it was still being sold at a discount. But i chose the WG Daytona over it. I just preferred the blue dial of the WG. I regretted that decision and couldnt come to grips with paying MSRP, much less at a premium. And ive always wanted a Pt Rolex. The heft is just nice. Fortunately i was able to fill that need with a Pt DD40. No need for another daytona. You have a nice one already. Try a DD40. Theyre still sold at MSRP.

Platona and SS Daytona are certainly hyped but the SS Nautilus is even more hyped imho. 5711 priced jumped from 55-60k overnight to 80-90k after it was discontinued. I passed the 5711 several times when it was still 45-50k, couldn't justify that price for a simple 3 hands stainless steel watch. But I can imagine myself paying market price for the Platona.

Beautiful watch

I always liked the white dial 5711 and thought it was under appreciated compared to the classic blue. At secondary market pricing though, I'd find it crazy to spend that kind of money on a 5711 over a 5170g currently. The 5170 is too good at lower entry level and far far from an entry level watch. The 5146 is amazing too at a normal price. AL&S does some sportier watches too at normal pricing. The Datograph Up/Down, Zeitwerk, among others.

Let's face it: the "market" price of lots of watches is ridiculous. A platinum Daytona for over $100k? A 5711? A Chronometre Bleu? An AP Jumbo? A SS Daytona?

IMO, anyone with one nice watch should be sitting out the aftermarket prices of these watches, unless money means next to nothing to you. I do know that isn't the TRF way, but that's my opinion.

Assuming we're talking about 911s, $40k for a 6-year old S or GTS ($130k new) is about as likely as a $40k Platona these days. But I agree with the general point, if a 10% loss for actually wearing it is a concern, $130k jewelry may not be the right purchase.

I think is about $76k without baguette and $86k with baguette.

To be 100% brutally honest, I would take a platinum Daytona over that ANY and EVERY day of the week!

This is an excellent point. I have been collecting Rolex exclusively - like with certain things, such as cars, the lines, history, formative experiences, etc. all speak to you in a certain way, like why would Seinfeld collect so many Porsches? They speak to him, and that's all anyone should care to know.

I think once I get the Platona, I will reassess and probably pivot to PP, but who knows. I still get excited about watches, but the thrill of acquisition has definitely waned over the last 20 years.

I have decided this is going to be my strategy. I like the watch enough to get it, but still have some hesitation about the brown. I have spoken to my regular ADs (and others) today and feel like I have landed on a good strategy for acquiring it in due course.

I definitely don't need it today, which is an improved place to be mentally from where I had been last week with the frenzied market. I can easily wait this out and look forward to a call. I've never waited for a watch before (luckily was always able to source it quickly when the appeal struck), so this will be a fine resolution.

Immediate gratification can be very expensive! Especially if your enthusiasm drops immediately once acquired. Have to be careful not to get swept into that momentum.
