You guys crack me up. I’ll have to share that comment with the mrs.
Im not a fan of PP or Venmo. Now no more wires unless I know the person.

And I’m not ruling out the RF former member. If I was in my 20/30’s I would be pretty upset. But I was more embarrassed (for 2 minutes) and then came to grips with the situation. $16k is no laughing matter. But I value my sense of peace more.

Sorry to hear this all happened. Glad you're okay despite it all. Appreciate the reminder and other comments of how things can go wrong when selling/buying such expensive items privately. I guess some scoundrels spend their days thinking of how to rip people off for a quick buck. Best to buy face-to-face or from a brick & mortar if possible. Good luck if you decide to pursue the money back.

Sorry to hear OP, please follow up with the police and keep us posted on what the outcome is, we can't let the bad guys win.

For legitimate sellers who are advertising a watch online to sell at the higher prices (say $3k-$4k or higher... I know this is a rolex forum and these prices are low for this forum, but anyway... ), the seller should be willing to get on a video call as needed, provide some linked-in or other validated profiles (perhaps both sides, buyer and seller), some type of establishing the identities and checking references before a money exchange takes place. Even then there could be issues, but at least the risk is reduced greatly.

Any chance you received a photo with the serial number? Report it as stolen to Rolex.

Money went through fine, the seller was just not honest. A service which offers escrow would be best.

$16K is peanuts. I've lost more on the markets in 15 minutes.

Of course I’m sorry, but how technologically wise are you?

I’m hearing more and more people being scammed online for different amounts but surely you got to have more than an email chain for this??

I do BEC, and other cyber security investigations so I see this type of thing daily. There are a tonne of steps people need to do before sending money. Face to face calls, PayPal, using work emails, etc.

I would suggest people stop purchasing ANYTHING from forum users or anyone they have not met in person and can vouch for their services if you’re not taking any other precautions, as this isn’t just one user.

It’s a pattern of fraud people need to avoid, which is these faceless purchases

Back in 2015 I had somebody use my handle on the forum to try to scam somebody stating that I had a Sub for sale and they PMed to me on TRF and we got it stopped. Always always always be extra careful and know who you were dealing with. Hope you get your funds back.

Something about this story isn’t right. The OP apparently knows a great deal more (than I do) how scammers steal. But, is “at peace” being a victim.
Scratching my head on this one…

Just another one of those threads where due diligence is done AFTER the money is sent.

Not saying that this is what happened here, but, we wire money overseas pretty regularly for personal/family purposes. One of the countries we wire to is Nigeria (brother in law lives there). We've wired to his bank in Nigeria probably 12 times. One time, we sent the wire as usual and it was deducted from our account right away, but didn't show up in his account.

It took over a month to get it resolved and, in the end, if I remember correctly, there was a notice or flag sitting on somebody's computer at (maybe) Chase that needed to be manually addressed. Once we tracked it to that, it was returned to us the next day.

Once again - simple solution! I don’t are if it is the pope , I am NOT sending cash ( a wire) to someone I don’t even know, period ! Op so sorry for your loss , but I hope all people on this forum will learn from this . Simply use AMX for payment , if seller insists I will pay extra to cover discount . If they have no merchant account use pay pal & CC - doublely protected . Even a great seller can make a mistake. I had one very reputable well known company, who sent me a $45000 timepiece , supposed to be complete .was missing a $5000 white gold back . Seller said they “would try to find it , to give them a week or so “ ! I said sure , meanwhile I will call AMX and dispute $5,000 of the charge. Magic , the seller miraculously “ found “ the missing back and overnighted it to me that day !!! Had I stupidly sent them a wire for $45 grand plus , I have no doubt I would still be waiting for the missing piece. You have got to protect yourself, just my experience & opinion. Hope this might save someone a whole lot of heartbreak. :-)

Honestly it's an uncalled for comment. Someone is out a five figure sum and certainly doesn't need to hear this
