Panerai is nowhere near on the same level of general desirability as Rolex nor has it ever been subject to the same demand and supply constraints. The AD's of Panerai are nice because they did not have chance to develop the same level of arrogance through being in position of petty power and they did not develop disdain for the average person by being asked for watches they cannot supply 100x a day, for many years. Those things cultivate very bad attitudes over time. |

I bought my first Panerai (233 ) two years ago when I needed a GMT and Rolexes were so hard to get.
The 233 had been discontinued but it seemed to represent the brand well with all the classic elements (sandwich dial/domed crystal/crown protector/power reserve). At 44mm it is my biggest watch. Given how perfect the 233 is, it is hard to find another Panerai I want. Given the the market seems to be moving the smaller watches, Panerai seems less relevant. The newer PM models do not have any of the classic elements and the smaller sizes seem inconsistent with what the brand is known for. In my opinion, some of the best models 233/372/127/690 have been discontinued and been replaced with very bland models.

There’s just something special about Panerai. I’ve been a fan and collector of the brand off and on for 25 years. Always having more of a connection with the Panerai’s I’ve owned than with the Rolex Subs & GMT’s.
There was a time when Panerai was hotter than Rolex. I can remember my first PAM 111 “E” which was around $4400. I wore that watch for 3 years straight then sold it for $5100. I’m not really a huge fan of the current CEO but I do like the recent model 1350 enough that I purchased it. I also haven’t worn my Rolex since I picked it up ;-) I think it’s possible to step away from Rolex and still be happy. |

Like many others I was very heavy into Panerai for a long time, starting in the late 90’s. I still own a couple and like them, but they unfortunately really watered down the brand. Too many models, too many hokey limited editions.
I still like the classics. Rolex has cemented itself as one of the all time greats, and as some brands have peaks and valleys, Rolex is something you can count on.

After 10 years of wearing primarily my Rolex BLNR, in 2023 I purchased a Luminor and a Radiomir. For the past year or two I rarely have worn the BLNR. Interestingly, just last week my Italian tailor called out my PAM574 I was wearing when in there buying a suit. I'm kind of over the drama of the Rolex brand.

Love it. My Rolex get very little wrist time also. Still enjoy the two I have, and will likely add one more, but I just love Panerai. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Back in 2014 I was deciding between a Panerai or Rolex. Then, brand new Rolex (pretty much any SS sports models) can be had for below retail, brand new, from grey dealers. But Panerai were all the craze, and I went for a PAM 351, Luminor 1950 case, tabaco dial, gold plated hands. Don’t regret going for the Pam, and I still have it, regret though not getting also a Rolex Sub or DJ when you can literally walk into an AD, try it on and buy it immediately.

Fair question. I can only speak to what gives me more enjoyment to wear and these 2 pieces are really fun to wear :
Rolex is Rolex and they are cool watches to own. I find myself wearing my Rolex watches less and less as more and more people are paying attention to the brand. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

I've been tempted by Panerai, but have not had issues getting most of the Rolex that I desire. Also, even with the calming of the Rolex hype, still no comparison in the value retention.
Of course, I have not been able to get a Daytona, so I opted for the Speedmaster Professional. |

Purchased PAM1085 while on vacation in Europe, was scared to wear Rolex. Tried it for 2 weeks, now sitting in my watch box, not getting any wrist time
Panerai is not even close to Rolex |

Who went Panerai and never went back to Rolex?
Panerai is an Interesting watch brand IMHO.
Due the fact that I recently trimmed down my collection I decided a while ago to sell my PAM1028. It is now in consignment at a grey dealer (not sold yet) To be honest, since last week I miss it and playing with idee to sell my Tudor Pepsi and keep the Panerai. What a hobby…and mind-switch haha

Pulled the trigger late this afternoon. Tomorrow the Tudor Pepsi goes in consignment and I am getting the PAM1028 back. I don’t want to have more then 3 watches anymore so the remaining trio: EXII - Milgauss black and PAM.

Smart move Gerardus...I tried a number of times living without a Panerai and it makes me insane, the itch that is. I won't settle down unless I have at least one.

Thanks, Recently I missed mine also a lot. Luckily it wasn’t sold yet. Changed it at the grey dealer today with the Tudor Pepsi. This piece is gonna be “for sale”.
