Wow, that is the exact opposite of the feel good, bonding with someone you don’t know, stories above. Sounds horrendous and would likely take away all my interest in owning and wearing a nice watch.

The great part of owning a patek is that you can enjoy it knowing 99% of people won't look twice at it. I have gotten numerous comments on my "casioak" and not a single comment on my 5712....

Someone once noticed my 5712 and replied “he man, nice AP”

I have a BLNR that was my only watch that I used to wear every single day for almost 10 years. I wore it for exercising, sports, meetings, to sleep, sometimes in the shower lol... I loved that thing to death until some time last year when things went crazy. Started to get random people coming up to me asking where I bought it, how much I paid, was it real or fake, from the AD or grey, etc. etc. After a while I wasn't really comfortable wearing it so much anymore which is when I started to look at other brands and REALLY get into watches.

My Patek, Omega, and Zenith have so far been amazing, no one notices or cares and that's what I prefer.

Reading the prior posts, I'll admit I'm a little mystified. I get comments on my Pateks (which are more dress than sport models, e.g. 5205, 5227) fairly often from friends and acquaintances. They never know what it is, but they suspect it's something, and typically say something like "that's a really nice watch, what is it?".

A few weeks ago while washing my hands in a nice restaurant the bathroom attendant asked if I was wearing a Patek.

These days, my Rolex watches get about 10x the amount of comments as my Pateks (aka, over the past few years, I probably got 10 comments on my Rolexes and 1 comment on my Patek).

Makes sense to me though.

The only watch anyone has ever gone out of their way to comment on is my Hulk (it happened twice). Otherwise no one bats an eye.

Wearing my 5726-014 out with a t shirt and shorts in a surf shop on the islands and the owner of the store says “hey, you can buy a small house with that watch.”..

I was with some family who aren’t into watches and they heard him but we all laughed it off.

My wife likes to borrow my Aquanaut 5167a when she goes out on work stuff or networking events in the city, and DOES get more compliments for it than I ever get.

That made me think that people actually do notice it more than I think, but choose not to mention it, whereas it may come more natural as an icebreaker to a lady... Not sure.

Otherwise, I'm for sure 'that crazy person' who starts to talk to people about watches. Almost always becomes the start of a memorable conversation... :)

20 years wearing an aquanaut then a Nautilus (5726 on strap) traveling the world and got only one comment from a young enthusiast at a car dealership.

Never, but I don't own a Nautilus or Aquanaut.

And Rolex, less than 10 times.

My sports models definitely get noticed by the under 50 crowd.

I have only had maybe 6 or 7 comments about the watch I am wearing, and definitely never a Patek. This excludes jewelry retailers of course, as they are full of watch nerds.

Of the times I can remember:
-Vintage omega seamaster - sales guy had the same one
-Sales guys at the nicer clothing store were also watch nerds.
-Random waiters have been watch nerds. Maybe 2 or 3 times?
-Various parties/corporate things another 5 or 6 times, maybe. But usually b/c I commented on their watch only to learn they dont know anything about their watch lol

And I think that's it.

A vancleef SA in Paris noticed my 5235r once and went on for 30 minutes on how he loves this specific model from Patek and regulators in general.

I hardly ever get comments on a watch in the wild. Two exceptions I remember:

- Teenager noticed my 5711 from 20 ft away while I was hanging out in a park
- Flight instructor commented on my Mark XV during a check ride

8 years ago I would have been pleased to talk about my RG Nautilus but now I would be looking over my shoulder waiting for the partner to strike, sad state of affairs.

Had the store owner of an up scale jewelry store comment that that he sees me here often. I replied with that I enjoy my time frequenting his store. He responded with "with that watch, you can go anywhere you want."

I do my best to avoid the watch being noticed in public, unless it’s an event with people I trust. Then again, the people in the environment may not be. Horror stories of waiters/waitresses noticing luxury watches and giving tip offs to their accomplices are more common than we think nowadays. I’m contented with what I have and that’s all that matters. Compliments from others is something I can live without.

Only once, was wearing the 5205r on an emirates flight and an attendant complimented the watch and asked what it was. Turns out he had a collection of grand seikos so was nice to have a chat with a watch enthusiast. Apart from that never had anyone say anything.

Once, someone at work noticed my Aquanaut. Once, ~2005, someone noticed my white dial Mark XV, while riding the EWR monorail. Once, a server at a Shanghai-ese restaurant in LA noticed my 16710 (late 90s). That's all, folks.

Only once in a crowded elevator. I was wearing a 5960/1A-010.

The gentleman commented on how nice it was. I then noticed he was wearing a vintage Rolex 16710 in great condition. I also commented on his watch. Unfortunately the I had to get off before we could have a conversation about our watches.

It was a nice interaction.

Once a waiter commented on my blue dial OP36, and a few random sales associates on the sunburst Daytona, but that's about it outside of the watch world

the world has always been divided in "haves" and "have nots", and now it gets really really noticeable...

i sometimes think people in my age (gen x) are the last generation where it seemingly was possible and plausible to move upwards during our lifetime... not great..
