Lap Swimming with Rolex Gold

You should be able to swim with the DJ - No problem. Would be hesitant with the speedy, or at least have the water resistance checked once a year - Its certainly not a dive watch

I remember that thread. Never did understand what caused the issue but gold is one of the most inert metals and by all rights his skin should have been sloughing off in the hot tub to affect it like that.

Perhaps a chemist/ metallurgist can shed some light but should be fine, OP. Much more likely to smash it up at the ends changing direction than it to go luminous in the pool.

I used to swim laps wearing a Sub, but have been using an Apple watch since they came out with the waterproof versions 5-6 years ago. The fitness app is great for tracking your laps, especially if you swim in multiple pools of differing lengths since you can manual enter it. There are a lot of dedicated swimming apps as well. Once you try the Apple watch for swimming you'll never go back to a Rolex.

I’m not worried about the gold on my TT DJ when swimming, but would the chlorine affect the tags, bezel cover and plastic stickers?

I swim with my BLRO, about 6000m a week. I asked the AD about this - just make sure you rinse it with fresh water after each swim and you will be just fine. I have a garmin that predates the rolex that I wear on my right wrist to count distance/lap times. Do I care how I look wearing 2 watches? Not in the least.

Also, of note: my gold wedding band shows no discoloration from the chlorine.

I’m sure the watch can handle it. It’s waterproof to a much deeper depth so you’re good. I just wouldn’t do it because I hate playing sports or exercising with a Rolex on. I do martial arts, box, tennis, weights, tai chi and if all feels more natural to me without the watch. It’s not a matter of protecting the watch, I just feel like I have better movement of my arms without it.

Get a Garmin and leave your Rolex at home.

If you are new to lap swimming and you want to monitor and evaluate your progress, then get a Garmin, like the 945. That watch shows you the laps, average speed, max speed, SWOLF and many other points a swimmer can review to be better. It can even be adjusted to the length of the pool in yards or meters. More importantly, it will show your progress through months and years through Garmin connect and you can see how and where to improve. Swimming with a Rolex will only do one thing for you: tell the time, which you can actually see on the wall of your pool facility. Also, you could potentially hit your Rolex on the hard plastic lane lines while swimming. Its not really worth using it. If you useGet a Garmin for swimming and leave your Rolex at home.

I am a part time SWIM COACH and former competitive swimmer. Nowadays, I swim over 15,000 meters a week in a 50 meter private club facility. In my over 20 years of swimming there, I have yet to see someone use a Rolex while swimming.
I also own a few Rolex and a lot of Garmin watches.

To each his own. I prefer to live in my watch, so it’s part of my activities. Plus it’s safer on my wrist than in a locker or in my car. I use my garmin as a tool, so when I need it I use it also.

I DID read somewhere of a ROSE GOLD watch whose gold was tarnished from being in a hot tub that used Bromine chemicals. I do not do hot tubs or rose gold so I have no real experience to share with that.

And you are right - the watch is safest on your arm and NOT ever left in your car, locker, gym bag, etc. "Out of possession, out of a watch" is a good term to remember.

We occasionally read posts at TRF of watches stolen from cars, lockers, etc.

Good call out regarding the Rose Gold.

Does anyone know if Rolex Rose Gold would be affected? I think Rolex's rose gold is a gold, copper, and platinum alloy. While gold is relatively inert, I'd naturally expect raw copper to react with chlorine or bromine in a pool.

That being said, I believe that the Rolex rose gold contains high amounts of platinum to specifically prevent tarnishing.

Never ever leave an expensive watch in a locker on in your bag. Much safer on your wrist.

I know this is 6 months old but I swam with 2 subs daily for about 5 years.

A 116613LB (TT) and 116610LV - both absolutely fine. The only change was the scrapes and dents I picked up from the poolside.

I never even considered pool water to even be a factor

Enjoy your Rolex in the pool/lake/ocean! Just rinse it off with fresh water after.

I swim in all mine, WG SS YG - Never had one single issue. I rinse it thoroughly in the shower after and they shine like new!

Don't leave it in your car. Wear it, enjoy it, no need to worry.
