i think once its organized, the "known" people get the details privately. Even if i don't know everyone personally, meeting in a public place doesn't bother me. Its the public announcement that the event is at location X at this time and date as then you don't know who is coming

I recently posted something similar under a different thread and subsequently started a whatsapp group which currently consists of 6 TRF members. It's the usual watch chit chat, sharing of pics etc with the intention of hopefully organising some horological meets! If anyone is interested please DM me and I can add you.
