I wear a shiny gold sub because it makes me happy. I wear it anywhere from business meetings with comfy chairs to hiking up the Cascade mountains. If someone notices it and wants to talk about watches that's cool. If someone notices it and gets upset that I chose to wear a watch that makes me happy, that's also their right. I suspect most people don't even notice. I don't really worry what others think of it. At the end of the day it's on my wrist to make me (and maybe the lady friend) smile.

As a high school teacher, most of the people who notice my watch are students when I'm helping them at their desk or my desk. They ask if that's real; I tell them it better be. They ask how I can afford it as a teacher. I tell them it's because I don't have kids.

Haha, exactly! My few coworkers who have made jokes about my watch expenditures are the ones with four kids, multiple cars, boats, etc. I have none of those things, just a few steel watches.

Depending on your vocation and location then of course what you wear does matter and is noticed. Be it whether you wear a stupid watch to a meeting, mink coat food bank or a less than affluent area.

I'd speculate that some who suggested you can wear whatever stay firmly within their socio-economic bubble.

As soon as you step out of it sometimes it is not appropriate to wear expensive items in the wrong situation.

In the 7 years I've daily worn a Rolex I can only think of 1 time where anybody commented. Most people don't know or care and if wearing a Rolex made me feel uncomfortable then I wouldn't have one at all.

Only once. When I noticed that the light reflected by the fluted bezel of my watch hit the faces of the judges to my left hearing my case.

Trust your gut, OP. These watches don't come cheap. If something in your gut is telling you not to wear them outside, then don't.

Not anymore.
So many fakes about these days, and so many cheap flashy watches..that I don't think people care, or notice that much.

Not a great idea to wear a Rolex in public in many major cities in the world, probably not and issue in most small towns. But your going to make yourself a target wearing a flashy watch with oyster bracelet around London, Rio, Naples, Barcelona. Even more so with the impending recession, flaunting wealth isn't going to be fashionable or a smart thing to do in the next few years. I cover my Rolexes when in public now, I've heard of Rolex owners being followed home from restaurants and robbed in the UK. Fortunately not so much here in NY, the police don't mess around.
So enjoy them at your private residence.

A grey dealer here in the netherlands was robbed three days ago (van wonderen watches), nice guys didn't deserve it. Talked to a lady at an AD in Amsterdam who said they were not allowed to wear Rolex to and from he AD anymore.

So yeah wearing a blue faced Sky-Dweller on a PCL bracelet in amsterdam is going to make you a target.

Have to agree and in the real world would doubt if 97% of all humans in this world would notice or care whatever watch anyone was wearing.

Did you read the rest of it? You do understand that I was referring to what other most people think of others wearing Rolex watches i.e. they don't care, don't you? Perhaps there is a language problem here i.e. English is not your first?
You do seem to have a problem with other posters. You are a fairly new member... my well-intended advice is to take it easy and think a bit before you jump in with your 'triggered' responses - you sound a bit hysterical, with all the drama and multiple exclamation marks.

No, not for that reason at all..
But sometimes i feel a bit of shame when wearing my sub in public because so many people that i do not want to be associated with wear the exact same watch.. And no these are not ''upper class'' or rich people by any means. I would think i would much more comfortable with a patek or Lange than a AP for the exact same reason(nautilus excluded)

If you no it's worth to you then you'll not be bothered about others wearing it also.

Think of it as a cherished possession to them as it is to you and you'll be fine.

never felt uncomfortable but I have to admit I sometimes found myself in situations/neighborhoods where I thought to myself I would be better off without it.

The only time I feel uncomfortable wearing a watch is when my wrist swells up to the point where the bracelet is too tight.

Are you kidding me? Who gives a sh!t what other people think? If it makes you happy wearing a watch or piece of jewelry, do it.

Exactly. Well said. I have always liked watches in general and Rolex was to me the pinnacle of all the things in watches I liked. I never even thought about it in terms of what non Rolex wearers might think. I have enjoyed running into other watch enthusiasts over the years and talking watches. The rest is not important.

I follow this rule with watches, $$ cars, boats, toys, etc... There comes a time in you our life when you have most things figured out and when “you” are you. Any need or caring what anyone thinks of lifestyle choices or purchases means nothing to me. Get to that point and you truly our “master of your domain”.

If a watch wears you it gets attention. If you wear the watch it blends in - unless you want everyone to see it.

If you are in an environment where materialist envy drives your peers/clients/boss, and you can not wear a nice watch without attracting criticism you are in a lousy place. But at least you can leave your watch off. And leave your nice car at home, and pretend you live somewhere less nice, and do your best to convince people that after years of hard graft, commitment and sacrifice, you still have nothing to show for it.

There are people I know who think nothing of spending over £100K on a car, who wouldn't pay more than £100 for a watch. Everyone's different. And envy is envy. Envious people will always find an excuse to hate people, whether they are looking up at them or down on them.

In every major city in the world there are high crime areas where every “who cares what people think” poster here would suddenly care a lot about what they have on their wrist
