It's a rolex, do it right. Drop it off at the Dallas RSC, know that it's gonna be close to $1k or so, and know that when it comes back it will be perfect. It's that easy.

I tend to agree for some good reasons.

1, The watch cost nothing in the first place.
2, The absolute confidence that the work performed(assuming a full service) and replacement parts will be first class in every respect including the very best(exclusive) lubricants.
3, The watch will also have a 2 year international service warranty.
4, It will be a good life experience to have a full RSC service as the very first, and a great yard stick.

Of course that's all assuming one may consider the watch is worth it.

If one thinks the cost of a full RSC service on a Rolex is steep, ask around about the pricing structure for a genuine full service on other high end brands like Omega, AP, Patek, etc.
It will put things into a better perspective.

In summary, you won't go wrong in the long run with a full service from Dallas which is close to you anyway

That seems high unless there are several parts that need replaced. I payed $600 or under three times now from a place in California that uses authentic parts. I was pleased and the watch was like new each time I got it back.

However, it being said that it was given to you it doesn't really matter. You wouldn't be able to touch one of these for under $5000 if you went looking for one so you are coming out so far ahead for a great watch I wouldn't worry about the service cost.

Kevin has serviced several watches for me,
from a 1969 Speedmaster that I bought in rough
shape to a 1977 1675 GMT and my 16610 Sub.

He's an expert with lots of experience. Good man.

Located in North Dallas near 75 and 635.

basic axiom...if one can afford to buy an $8K+ Rolex, they should be able to cover a $750-$1200 servicing when/if the time arises.

Rolex charges a full service at ~600 bucks and then the crystal is another 100 or so. They do a case and bracelet refinish at no charge. With this you know that your watch was completely taken apart, checked, reassembled and properly oiled. There may be some other charges but you might not need to have that work done - it is itemized and you need to approve the work before they will do anything.

If you are just looking for a shop that will give you a "deal" of around 700 bucks you don't really know what they are doing, do you.
Not sure if it matters....
Sadly you don't know what they are really doing at RSCny either (maybe Dallas is honest?) ...
I was charged for a crown and tube replacement that was not done.

700-800 sounds more like it.

My 16710 was just in for service at the Beverly Hills RSC in May.

Priced as follows:
$600 Factory Movement Service
$180 Sapphire Crystal
$72 Winding Crown

Total: $852 - Not bad in my opinion...

I had my 16622 yachtmaster serviced at Dallas and crystal replaced. Total cost was $875. That's the cost of owning a Rolex. Routine maintenance is just part of the deal.

Wow! Congrats on being gifted the 16610! A reasonable amount spent on its servicing is well worth it.

Sorry but RSC Dallas did not even screw the caseback on a watch of mine and perform a pressure test. First time I went swimming my watch fogged up. Your service is only as good as the guy working on it. You have no clue who will touch your watch at RSC Dallas. If you want your watch serviced right then send it to Rik Dietel in Florida. You will not find a more capable cw21 watch repairman in the country. His reputation is as good as gold on the forum.

One correction. At an RSC, there is more than 1 guy working on your watch. In fact there are several. This is why when shoddy workmanship happens at the RSC most likely there are no consequences. You cannot know who or how qualified the person/people really are.
Someone like Rik Dietel is totally accessible by phone, his work is done by himself, and one shoddy service can tarnish his reputation. Funny how some folks here still swear that an RSC service is by far the "best" and that they don't mess up folks watches. There are plenty of documented horror stories of RSC services gone bad.

I can't recommend Rik Dietel (www.timecareinc.com) highly enough. He's fantastic to work with and did excellent work on my watch.

A couple of thoughts since I taken several watches to the Dallas RCS.

If you are close by in Dallas, make the trip, no mail, so no worrying if the watch made it there. Plus they give out chocolates.

You get a two year warranty with the watch.

Every time I have been there, I was well treated.

Make sure you explain what work you want done so there are no misunderstandings.

Make sure you inspect the watch when it comes back from service while you are at the RSC. While their work is top quality, they are still human. I had a dial issue that I caught while I was at the counter. They resolved it on the spot.

My wife had her 26mm DJ serviced last year at Rolex service center and it was about $800 with crystal change. It came back looking brand new.

Agree that taking it to Rolex is probably the best bet. For every horror story from factory service there's easily a dozen from an ad and 100 from a non-authorized shop.
Additionally, if the places you took it for estimates are authorized shops with Rolex parts accounts, their quotes should all be roughly the same (there may be variance due to shop markup and the discretion of the watchmaker estimating) and they should be the same as RSC because RSC sets the prices for their account holders to charge.

A 15 Aug, 2016, Dallas RSC estimate for service of a 1680/8 gold sub which has never been serviced in its 42-year life:

1. Factory Movt Serv-press prf & crystal ----------------------- $1050
2. Refinish case --------------------------------------------------------0
3. 1 x Dial-Blue with yellow plots ---------------------------------$510
4. 1 x pair hands ----------------------------------------------------$69
5. 1 x Bezel Insert -------------------------------------------------- $48
6. 1 x Second Hand ------------------------------------------------- $36
7. 1 x Winding crown ------------------------------------------------ 0

Total = $1713 exclusive of tax

There was no evidence of corrosion.

This estimate includes nothing for the bracelet which RSC said they could not work on since it contained contained some non-Rolex manufacture parts.
