Swimming?

Do you guys (and gals) take your watches in the water? I'm about to head to San Diego for a beach vacation and I'm wondering whether I should take my new GMT.

I used to think you could take water resistant watches into the water but a local watch maker told me not to and that water resistant really just means that the company is warranting to replace the watch if the seals fail during the warranty period. I've also read that if you are acutally going to use a mechanical watch for a diving watch, you need to check the seals on a regular basis.

Of course, I've occasionlly taken my Omega SMP into the water and it doesn't seem worse for the wear.

Any problem with Rolex water resistance or is it as good as promised?

Maybe I'll just take an old Suunto that I have just so I don't have to worry about it.
