But, let’s try to make this happen in the next month or two, by starting some meaningful discussion!
Let’s hear some preferences:

Weekdays versus weekends?
Indoors, or outdoors?
In SF, or surrounding Eastbay?
Lunch-time, or dinner/evening? (I’m assuming meeting at a restaurant where we can order food and drink)

Have I missed anything? What would everyone like? (let’s do this!!)

weekends for me - ideally peninsula or the city but open to go anywhere. Do we need much organization? Depending on how many people are coming all we need is a nice hang out spot.

Friday and Saturdays can be pretty busy in The City, but maybe that’s more free for everybody who are working.
Lunch versus dinner?

No we don’t need much organization… Just a place, time, a room big enough for whoever RSVP’s, and getting the word out.

People have mentioned security concerns with too much exposure to passers-by, so it would be great to do it indoors, so we can lay out our toys, and have fun! Can you think of some places?

I'd be interested in a Bay Area get-together. I lived in San Francisco for almost fifty years, but moved to the wine country 2 1/2 years ago.

S.F., East Bay, Peninsula, or North Bay would be OK with me.

I am interested too and can help try to secure a location since I live in the city and know some folks with venues. May I request that we do a GTG/Swap meet? Would love to see whats out there locally and not have to worry about shipping and undisclosed issues and I have some pieces I would like to move too.

oh man great momentum going !! also so down for this event. i would say weekends, like saturday early dinner/drinks at an enclosed outdoor seating type venue. i don't want to volunteer to organize but am happy to throw out some recommendations. how about we agree on a date, say mid-september, and then we can decide on a place.

anyone going to the wiscon event ? that's supposed to be end of September in Vegas, and arranged by gerardo here on the forum. haven't seen any threads about it yet and he's been slow with the details via email.

As long as this thing is happening sometime after our move to the area in mid-October (and it's on a weekend), I'll make the drive up from Monterey.

I’m stoked that this is gathering steam!

We LOVE the “swap-meet” concept, as I also am about to list things for the first time. (Tuxedo DJ, Batman, NIB Skydweller).

My wife (Shetona) had a few awesome ideas. Consider a place that may have some security, such as, at a local store?
I have some connections at Tourneau or Shreve, and might be able to talk them into allowing an after-hours event. (We could each chip in $20, and pay the security guard to remain at the door, allowing entrance only to people who say the “TRF“ password!)
We can walk up the street afterwards for dinner, if desired.

To play this right, let’s give ourselves enough time.
How does October 9th, 23rd, or 30th sound?

In the meanwhile, I’ll contact the stores and check out their interest. (allowing “swap-talk” may have both pros and cons, right?)

I like it! 23rd sounds good to me (30th is too close to Halloween and kiddo activities).

Anyone else good with October 23rd, in SF?

If we have 10 or more of us, we know the kind of venue to look at.
(Otherwise, if there’s 4-6 of us, then let’s just meet at a steakhouse, and have funny the table!)

OK… It’s getting to be time to send a real e-mail around!
Looks like this could actually be made to happen. But we’re going to need a better way to communicate than: “I’m interested!“ messages with no identification or contact information.

If you’d be willing to put your e-mail in this thread (or private message me if you wish), I will send out some information as a group e-mail, and will include everyone as “blind copy”, if that matters to anybody.
(Please let me know how important the privacy is to you, so I can respect that.)

As I wrote above, the size of the group will dictate the venue and the plan. And, please write me if you have ideas or suggestions! I’d love it to be in a place where I can wear something special, and bring 2-3 more pieces to share. This could be really fun!

Good news is, I think I have a good place lined up. (Just waiting for the final OK before I send out an email to everyone.)

Trying to make it extra fun!

Will this GTG be within San Francisco city limits?

I might make the drive all the way from Sacramento but lately I've had a phobia of parking my car anywhere in the City right now due to an extremely high car break in rate that's been going on this year. If the event was being held in say Walnut Creek or Pleasanton instead, I think I would be more likely to go..

Yes, it will be in San Francisco city limits. I’m going to as extreme a level as we can to make us all feel secure at the event, but I can’t comment on statistics regarding car break-ins on a city street.
Not sure how to reassure you, but if you’re not driving to The City these days, then this isn’t gonna work for you.

On the other hand, if you’re in Sacramento, let me know if there’s things going on more locally. I live in Davis, and would love to cross paths with TRF’ers around here!

Yes, for sure! I've only met one other TRF member in the flesh here in the Sacramento area since I first registered for TRF in 2007. I want to change that and meet more collectors, though I doubt my modest watch collection will really catch anyone's attention.

If I remember, there was a Sacramento GTG just last year that was organized here on TRF. It happened in January, before the pandemic and was held in Roseville. Unfortunately I didn't make it to that one.

If you’ve got any leads as to who was involved in that event, it would be a great start to put together an invite list and see what’s possible.
I DO know there was a “RedbarSac” group in Sacrament, so maybe that’s the same folks?

Anyway, my energy is going to this SF event now, but let me know if we can do something closer to home - that’ll be fun!

Petty crime is up a tick, but parking in a garage can help lower some of the risk associated with the smash and grab in the wrong parts of town in the City. I work in the City and luckily haven't had an issues with some of the shenanigans you read about on Google.

I'm originally a Sac native, now in the South Bay so great to see other NorCal enthusiasts on TRF. A shame they are literally down to 1 Rolex AD in Roseville in a decent size metro.

UPDATE!

Lots of folks interested, and sending me PM's - - - all good.

Still waiting to hear back with a definite from the retailer, but if they won't do it, I'm going to approach a different one. (there's 2 AD's in SF, as you know....)

Will keep everyone up to date as developments happen.

And for what it's worth, hope to see lots of you on the "Increased Private messaging" After Dark drawing on Sunday. SO much fun, thanks to Steve and our Sponsors!! Thank you!

Thanks very much for that, Jessie.

So far, everyone has been very nice, and I've got the info stored, so I can send out a "batch" e-mail once we can get a venue hammered down.

Thank you for your patience, and let's make this a really fun event!
