It wouldn’t bother me, but I use watches pretty hard.

Wouldn't bother me especially if the price is good. Unless, of course, you are buying it as an investment.

Got it; in that case it all comes down to if you think the price is worth it. For me I would get it and wear it and in 5 years or so you can send it in to service and have them polish out this scratch along with the other scratches you’ve accumulated during that time.

It's hard to tell from the pic how bad the scratch is. It could be removed with a little metal polish on a q tip or it could take more effort. Ask more questions of the seller. Specifically, could the scratch be easily removed. Get better pictures. Then decide.

Is it ok to post pictures from DavidSW on this forum like that?
I'd rather you posted a link instead: https://davidsw.com/watches/rolex-wa...-black-dial-5/ And yes, buy from DavidSW with your eyes closed. |

I put a scratch like that on my sub the first day I wore it to work. That being said, it's mostly about the $$. What's the scratch worth? If the watch was 8K would you buy it? I thought so. So somewhere between that and the price is what the scratch is worth to you.

I think you should buy what you're comfortable with. By you posing this I think it's going to be on the back of your mind... So I'd save yourself (and the seller probably) some time/stress by finding something you're happy with off the bat.

What Do You All Think Of This Daytona Scratch?
Exactly. It’s a picture of a watch for sale, posted on a watch forum; by someone who is thinking of buying it. Of course it’s ok. And to answer OP’s question, yes I would buy it. That scratch looks tiny and you’ll add to it over time. Sent from my iPad using Tapatalk |

I find it interesting that this watch is given ”excellent condition” rating.
Maybe excellent condition = not polished.

Seems like some nice advertising for DSW's watch to me. I'm not so certain why the need to highlight this scratched watch. My Dad used to have a saying something along the following. "Lady, no squeeza da fish. You no like dem, thrown 'em back in da wagon. Gidde'up, Dolly." I recommend the same, move on and let Dave do his business. Stop squeezing the fish if you don't like it.

Priced right, scratches don't bother me as wear my timepieces like daily beaters. That small scratch would simply be part of normal 'break in'. There will be MANY more of them over the years :)
Please don't polish it, just keep scratching her up. Then in 5 to 10 years RSC service will make her look brand new again (if you want) so you car start scratching her up all over again.

It doesn't matter, nice watch, but the seller is not correct imho. Majority of used watches for sale are being made to look presentable one way or another. Apart from a few TRF'ers with polish OCD nobody in the real world buys a scratched up watch. Should you buy this one ? No, I don't mind marks but on the top of the lug it needs a RSC pro to fix that. Probably they force you to fully service it which will add 1K to the price.

Watches are meant to be worn and are not museum pieces. Get it, wear it and enjoy it.

What the heck kind of case scratch is that. It's 1/2 square shaped. Goes across that one lug and then up toward the bezel (maybe the 2nd line is light reflection? I can’t tell by the web site's photos).
If I didn't know it was serviced recently by RSC, I would think it was a piece of left over case plastic. Sad thing is I bet someone tried to already get that out by polishing (either the reseller or RSC). Maybe they already took some of it out and it still shows. |

Are you seriously considering using cape cod on a unpolished daytona?
Sorry, gonna be more helpful... We would need better picture to judge how bad the scratch is, but to be honest it doesn't look that bad. Elephant in the room however is that its been polished, that or the picture is very very soft...

Why are the lug hoods polished instead of brushed?

Depending on the model, some brushed and others polished.
If this scratch was on a brushed watch would have been easy to correct with a fiver pen

exactly. when buying a nearly $20k modern watch that was mass produced . personally, i wouldn't expect deep scratches or dings.
the OP's topic here isn't one of those typical "jesus, i see hairline scratches on my watch when viewing through a 10x loupe! what should i do? " now if the OP (or anyone) is cool buying a watch that has been discounted to account for a deep mark or two, great. great. |
