Either will work, but personally I see the 36 on women as more gaudy and ‘look at me’. 31 for my wife

I think 34 mm would be the best for you.

You could go either way.
I'm voting for both. One smaller watch(31) as a dress watch which may be more fancy and another larger watch(36) which presents as a more casual watch as a daily wearer.

The pics are a little misleading as good as they are, as the smaller watch has a darker dial and wears slightly smaller visually, with the inverse situation occuring with the larger watch.

If it came down to a choice between the two watches you tried on.
I might be inclined to vote for the 36 as a potential one and done choice. But a better choice might be the darker dial variant in a 36 as i think it would cross over many different scenarios more easily overall. JMHO
My wife has the 31 equivalent in your 36 option and it's perfect for her right across the spectrum and she wore it on our wedding day.
Great pics by the way
Please let us know which way you go?

31 or 36

You can definitely wear either, but I prefer the 36 on you. I might be biased, though:

Both of mine are 36. My wrist is 6 1/4 inches.

31 if you want to go for a more classic look, 36 if you want to go for a more modern look. I would really like to see a 34 on you though as I think that would be the best of both worlds.

My wife would wear her smaller 28 mm when she combines the watch with her bracelets on the same wrist. If it is the only one on her wrist she would regularly go for the 36 mm.

I saw a couple people reference a 34. They don’t make a 34mm DJ. But I think you can get a 34mm OP.

If you want timeless, go for the 31 DJ champagne fluted jubilee (steel & gold with batons). THE classic Rolex reference for a lady IMO. Then, add a 34 or 36 OP for your sportier option down the line. I personally think 34 OP black would look best as watch number 2.

You could do either but it really depends on if you want a more casual look or something that dresses up a little better.

The 31mm would be better for the latter…watch size is subjective.

31 or 36

100% 31mm looks better

36mm is for women with beefy wrists

I think either is an option. Which is to say that I don’t think either looks silly/ridiculous.

To make myself extremely unpopular, in the event of being unable to decide based on appearance, one could consider whether one has a movement preference. My personal perspective is that both calibers have pros and cons.

Another girl voting here. 36 looks absolutely perfect on your wrist. i have one and it is also so easy to glance down and read. Truth is other than us watch nerds the number of folks that notice our watches is pretty low. So go with what brings out your biggest smile when you look at it. Enjoy your Rolex whatever way you go.

I had a look on the Rolex Website last night and there are some really nice configurations on the Lady Datejust 28mm available. Stainless steel on Jubilee bracelet with Diamond Bezel and dial is about £11k and a 2 Tone version is about £15k. I would think you could request one of these from a Rolex AD without too much of a wait, especially as it is for a special birthday.

Have you had a play on the Rolex website configuring some different options?

Girl voting 36, but only bc that’s what I wear. I think both sizes can look casual or dressy depending on what else you’re wearing (outfit, jewelry, etc.). FWIW, I wear a 36 daily and am petite with tiny wrists, 5’3” 105 lbs. Good luck with your choice!! Either way, you will love your new watch!!

I prefer the 36mm as I think the proportions are better and you will be able to read the time on the watch as you get older and your eye get weaker. I showed my wife and she said the 36 looks better on you. The 31 looked too small.

As others have suggested, go to your AD and try on a 34mm OP.
It may be a better fit for you. If you want/need a date function you could source an older 34mm OP Date and have it RSC serviced. If I've only learned one thing (for me) about watches is-try before you buy.

Let us know what you decide.

My wife owns both a 28 and a 31. She likes the 31 better but wouldn't go for a 36 under any condition. The 31 is a perfect lady's Rolex. The larger one can look a bit masculine, imho.

My wife had her pick of whatever she wanted. She’s 5’, 115lbs, with small wrists. She chose the 36 dj with black dial and I have to agree. I think it looks great on her for any occasion and any outfit. The fluted and jubilee can be dressed up or down very easily. She only takes hers off at bedtime.
