Love it.
It was what made Rolex, stand out from all the other brands, many years ago.
Before other watch companies followed suit.

I can't say that I hate the "bubble" but when I was shopping for a white Explorer II, the black dial/white markers of the SDD was so stunning that I went with the black and removed the Cyclops.

Removal of the Cyclops revealed the beauty of the dial, improved its symmetry, and made the date easier to read at a glance from more angles:

I like it if I get tired of it. I would send it to jockey so he can grind it off.

I am in the "I like it" group.

By the way, doesn't the Panerai have their cyclops on the inside of the crystal? Very good idea!

I like it but unfortunately it screams "Look at me, I'm a Rolex."

As my eyesight fails with advancing years (or at least as I become more long-sighted), I find the Cyclops to be very useful in enabling me to see the date clearly, so I'd have to say I fall into the "like it'' category.

Hate it. Hard to read the time anytime the hands are under it and it throws off the balance of the face.

Makes no difference to me. Does make it easier to read the date looking straight on, but as Alcan said it is impossible at an angle.

I like the Cyclops. Its a Rolex trademark and it does make the date easier to read.

Love it. If it's got a date it must have the cyclops.

Or they could put something like a reverse cyclops under the glass not over it. By the way, that explorer looks really good!

No Brainer!

Well?

I love it, guys.....it's Rolex's signature trade mark!!

What about you? Vote with comments please.

Cheers - JJ

Functional and iconic - allows one to glance, not stare, at the dial when needing to know the date i.e. writing a check (which I know no one really does by hand anymore) or dating a memo or document. While that was/is the reason they first put it on a watch it has become a trademark and established, for me, the Rolex "look" from early childhood when I used to tell my Dad that I liked his watch with the "bubble" on it.

I think it looks good on my white face Explorer but not as good on black dial models.
That's just one mans opinion.

I voted "hate" but it's more complicated. My 1680 is pretty good. The 16710 is terrible, because the viewing angle is so narrow - not at all like the 1680. I don't know whether that's a sapphire/acrylic difference, or maybe partly due to the difference in the date wheels, or maybe due to the "taller" acrylic crystal, or what. In any case, they all make it hard to see the minute hand during a good 5-6 minute period each hour.
