Bought my SubC Date in 2011 when a Rolex AD would actually sell you something you wanted, without first making you buy a bunch of slow-moving stuff and some overpriced jewelry. And bribe them with a case of wine.

and 15 years later people are paying $16k for these same dreary no gold black subs that have been made in the millions upon millions and will continue to be made in the millions and millions.
Yet people here are crucified for paying $20k and getting a lovely colored green sub produced in much lower numbers and that will never be made again.
Go figure.

Funny! I'm currently wearing the Z-series Sea Dweller 16600 that I bought used BNIB around that time for $3,800. I bought a stainless Daytona for $7,800 around the same time. I wish I still had that one!

Man do I miss these times! Back then you could have a killer collection for 15k or so and walk into an AD and get treated like gold. And there was no instagram or youtube hype, just a bunch of watch nerds chatting and debating.....and of course the one thing that hasn't changed is everyone complaining about prices!

First Sub(no date) I bought was £2k..sold it though and had to pay the ridiculous figure of £4k to buy one with date a few years later.....I still have that. Both were just sat there in the window at the AD. The no date Sub became a Yachtmaster which was £2950.....found the receipt the other day. Had to laugh at a 36mm Exp ad on ebay the other day which still came with its £2300 price tag even though the watch was now on at £6300.....

I love seeing the old pricing threads. In 15 years from now we will likely laugh at spending 10k on a sub because MSRP will be 17k and they will sell for 35k on the grey side.

The first person I knew to own a Rolex Submariner was my older brothers friend somewhere in the late 80's. He paid £300 for it used from a local AD he'd fitted a safe for. I marvelled a few years later because he sent it back to Rolex and it was returned looking like a new watch for a couple of hundred pounds....that at the time was a revelation itself.

Oh boy, looking at this thread brings back some old memories of reasonable Rolex prices… I’d imagine that in another 10 years we’ll be talking how $10k retail seems reasonable for a Sub, since the MSRP will probably move closer to $20k by 2033. It’ll also be interesting to see how Tudor prices move, it would be interesting to see whether Tudor will experience a similar shift towards higher pricing, seeing how Tudor in 2023 is about the same market wise as Rolex in 2003.
