That explains the different colors of the lume. My rolex is 16800 and the dial was serviced. great write up.

5513 MK1 Maxi dial lume

Hi, i have just seen a 5513 Submariner with MK1 Maxi dial, serial 5,479 xxx
The lume plots are very white and really stand out. The hands also match colour.
When I held a strong torch to it the plots and hands did not glow at all.
Is this normal for the 5513 MK1 Maxi dials?
Thanks.

Awesome info.
I read somewhere, I think in this forum or Watchuseek that Rolex is just on strontium aluminate without the rare earth elements.
Rare earth elements Europium and Dysprosium are added for a brighter and longer lasting glow in Super Luminova. While Lumi Brite is Strontium Aluminate added with Europium and Dysprosium. That is why Seiko and LUM TEC lights up like Christmas tree and have the best lume in the market. So far.

Just found out the best lume material at present is X1.
I hope Rolex will be amongst the first to use this.

This explains an ongoing mystery with my watch. I have a Submariner date with the tritium markings on the dial, and I always assumed it was just...you know...tritium. I always wondered why it would glow off and on even after the tritium died away since I know that tritium itself isn't phosphorescent.

Thanks for solving my mystery!

My 1971 1016 Explorer matches your description completely: Flat application of the lume; lume is dead in both visible and UV light; light cream tint to the lume; hands and dial match. I don't know for sure if they are original, but they compare favorably to original examples I've seen.

not an authorative guide, and off course there will be examples that maybe buck this, it is after all Rolex.
Thank you.
This helped solve why the tritium lume markers on several of my 70’s watches became darker over the years even while locked away in darkness…
I was under the wrong impression that daylight would make them patina…

"Tritium lumen markers: Credit to Jedly1 for highlighting the remarkable luminescent properties of tritium. These markers, often used on watch dials, provide long-lasting and self-illuminating functionality without requiring an external light source. Thanks to Jedly1 for shedding light on this fascinating technology!" Free Fire
