I would NEVER invite an anonymous web-met person to my home for any reason.

Ok. You do you. But it’s different here in the UK. We do this sort of deal at home and any suggestion to meet elsewhere would be red flag. There is no such designated space at police stations or banks to do personal business, full stop, different country here.
If I had encountered this particular scammer elsewhere in public, I’d have lost the watch because he would have taken off with it on his wrist. He couldn’t get away from my place because he was locked in..therefore dealing at home and not a Starbucks, I didn’t lose my Rolex.

Cash is easier to counterfeit than a Rolex, all you need is a high end printer. Fine if you're only talking about a couple of bills. But who is going to take the time to examine 200 or more bills for counterfeits?

I have bought watches going into peoples homes, but I wouldn’t sell a watch letting someone into my home. They could pull a knife or anything.

I would only sell my watches in public places. The more cameras and people around the better. But never in my home.

It's such a different culture, isn't it.

Having said that I doubt I would sell anything of any real value from home now.

I've used Tom Coll in the Arcade in Glasgow many times now - its just safe and hassle free. And they are a great bunch

We don't all do it at home in the UK. You can only speak for yourself.

The closest police station to my house is rarely staffed. It's a big empty parking lot out of view from any main road, though I suppose there are cameras on the bldg. Even at a staffed police station, it's not like the cops come out into the sun to observe the transaction and make sure all is on the up and up. I just met a guy last week at a grocery store Starbucks to buy some Euros for an upcoming trip. I've done plenty of deals in homes and in parking lots, never an issue.

Glad they got him. Would never buy or sell anything from or to an individual online, especially an expensive watch.

That's our generations school of thought Kat. In our day, it took time to amass wealth or the credentials to demand superlative income. Stuffy wealth.

Now though, you'd be surprised how quickly "kids" can make money. Equally surprising is how many parents immediately entitle their kids to the same lifestyle which took them a lifetime to earn.

I understand what you are saying. I really do. Circumstances matter.

But, he failed himself more than anyone and needs to be accountable. I grew up in an alcoholic single parent family, but the basic Judeo-Christian ethos and secular law of the land of "Thou shall not steal" wasn't foreign to me.

Maybe I'm becoming a "get of my lawn" dude in my 50's, but this shift towards "I did something wrong so it's your fault as opposed to I wronged you and that's my fault", is something that I have a hard time fully comprehending.

And believe it or not, I have a hard progressive side to me.

Just thinking out loud, not attacking you at all. There's always room for varying opinions. BTW, love the Miami Vice avatar!

For anyone reading this and the past stories of losses while selling a watch - never, never, never meet an otherwise unknown buyer in your home, your car, or anywhere else except a staffed Police Station that supports a safe zone for transactions.

It depends on how far down the rabbit hole you want to travel.

On the surface, sure - he committed the crime, he needs to be held accountable. However, assuming he was not grown in a black box in a laboratory, we're going to assume that his behaviors are affected by his genetics and outside influences - his family, community, etc.

We can't affect genetics much (yet), so we're left with investigating on how these other external factors shaped this young man's behavior into thinking "this is okay."
