Hi guys,

My birthday is just around the corner and after speaking with my father, he decided that he wanted to buy me watch that would last my lifetime. I instantly decided I wanted a Rolex just because of the brand name. However once I started to research on various forums and YouTube channels such as TGV and FedericoTalks Watches. I started to respect the horological art that goes into making one of these watches. I started looking into Omega's as well as IWC. However after much deliberation I decided to go for a DateJust. I nosed around the Rolex website and used their fantasic watch configuration tool. This was my original configuration...

Having read many threads/posts by the users on TRF suggesting that you should always view a watch before buying, I headed to my local AD to have a look.
As a fairly young guy I didn't think I would be taken seriously at the AD. However the service was fantastic, the SA was great, helpful and knowledgable. They didn't have the exact model in store but they had simmilar watches. I decided there and then that the a 41mm DateJust is just far too big for my wrist and that the 36mm is perfect. I also fell in love with the fluted bezel and oyster bracelet. Both of which I really didn't like before I saw in person!

I then pondered through the Rolex brochure the SA provided me with and went through the Rolex configurator again. Now I just couldn't decide on the dial, Black, Silver or Champagne.
However I am now delighted to show you my first Rolex
(Cue the rubbish iPhone pics)

I think that the 36mm was the right choice. TGV over at The Urban Gentry sure did have a factor in this decision ;)

I have to say a massive thank you to all the forum users who's opinons/expertise/experience really helped me decide on the perfect watch. As well as appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into one.

If any of you guys have any experience with watch insurance in the UK, please check out my other thread:https://www.rolexforums.com/showthread.php?t=554656

Thanks
What a beautiful watch. Fits you perfectly and looks fantastic! Congratulations. One warning: your Rolex will certainly last a lifetime, but it may be joined by siblings, now that you've caught the Rolex bug!

Congratulations and excellent choice. It just so happens that was almost my exact first Rolex config when I was 23 years of age, but it had a champagne (gold) dial. However, my favorite now is the silver stick dial (like yours).

Outstanding! The 36mm is a perfect watch. Although I wear mine with a Jubilee, the Oyster gives it a more rugged look which is perfect for you. Congratulations.

It really is a hard choice between dials, I finalised it down to silver and black stick dials. I felt champagne would be a bit much. But maybe on it's next service I might get the dial changed to black. Either way they all look great.

Happy Birthday! That's an AWESOME gift. I'm glad you had a fun hunt as well! Welcome to the fray, good Sir.

I originally wanted the Jubilee bracelet, I thought the Oyster bracelet on a DJ looked crap on the Rolex configurator haha. However I visited my local AD and fell in love with it. It just adds a bit of sportiness to the watch. I do like the Jubilee bracelet, I think it's more comfortable but in my opinion it makes the watch more dressy, especially in two tone. It also makes the watch a bit more exclusive, I found that the majority of TT DJ's in the UK have Jubilee bracelets, in fact I found it quite hard to source one with a TT Oyster bracelet with my dial combo, but I suppose as the other member say, the hunt is the best part!

Just as a quick comparison here's my fathers DateJust, it's probably the biggest influencing factor in the choice of this watch haha. He received it as payment for a bad debt in the early 90's. He wears it daily as you can see from the stretch in the bracelet, and it only just underwent it's first service since he got it! It'd be cool to find out if any of you guys know when the watch was made? It has had its original acrylic glass replaced with a sapphire crystal. Amazing to think how little has changed over the years!
