This really is the answer to the question we all try to deny doing.

Using a soft baby toothbrush is also good to use. Make sure to get in between the links to remove dirt and grime. Thats the killer that stretch the bracelet and eats away the metal pins in the links.

The wear takes place inside the links where they rotate on the screws.

A toothbrush won’t clean in there?

An ultrasonic cleaner is the answer.

I pour some cleaner in my toilet, then stick my arm down the toilet and flush. Sometimes, if I've had a bad night, I flush twice.

This is exactly what I do!

I have an air compressor for my Paasche Aerograph and I use it rather than tooth bruch.

By doing so there is no risk of creating air lines.

Especially true with gold.

Not everybody's equipment. But the use of an air dryer is a good idea as well if not too close to the watch.

Lukewarm water in the kitchen sink with just a few drops of dish washing soap. A soft toothbrush. Wipe dry with a clean, soft dish cloth. Been doing this for 23+ years with my Sub...no problems, but check the crown is screwed tight first!

From the Rolex website;

WASHING AND CLEANING YOUR WATCH - Caring for your Rolex

You can help preserve your watch’s lustre by cleaning it occasionally with a cloth. You can also wash the case and metal bracelet from time to time using soapy water and a soft brush (not for leather straps). Water is the natural element for a Rolex with a metal bracelet, including the salt-water of the sea and ocean.

From the frequently asked questions - How can I look after my Rolex?

People also ask:

"How can I maintain my Rolex watch?" / "How to clean my Rolex" / "How do I wash my Rolex?"

You can help preserve its lustre by cleaning it occasionally with a microfiber cloth. You can also wash the case and bracelet (except leather straps) from time to time using soapy water and a soft brush. After wearing your watch in the sea, it is important to rinse it with fresh water to remove any salt and sand deposits. Before cleaning your watch, always ensure that the winding crown is screwed down properly against the case to guarantee waterproofness.

These are the suggestions from Rolex on how to look after your watch, they are possibly he best people to answer the question you have posed.

Dish soap, soft tooth brush, and distilled water. Leave it overnight to air dry it :)

Re: Cape Cod

Those are absolutely not recommended to clean your watch. They are designed to polish the mirror polished surfaces (i.e. remove metal) when the mirror surfaces have scratches.

Thanks. So they are intended to remove scratches. Do they work well for that ?

Step 1 - rinse with clean warm water (usually in the shower)
Step 2 - wash with whatever soap is available using soft cotton cloth or bare hands (usually in the shower)
Step 3 - rinse with warm clean water
Step 4 - dry gently with soft clean cotton cloth

Repeat steps 1 to 4 several times per week

I've done that with my Rolex watches for 30 years, both SS and 18ct. Zero marring due to washing/drying, zero scratching due to washing/drying, zero measurable bracelet wear.

I take it that those of you who adopt a non contact drying method only wear your watches whilst naked? Because any watch to clothing contact is going to cause way more more micro marring/swirls and potential scratches than carefully drying a clean watch with a soft cloth or towel.

Wiping a dry mirror polished surface on the other hand is the worst thing you can do.

If used as intended, correctly, and on an already clean watch.

If you don't feel 100% confident of how to do it correctly i would stay away from any kind of polishing product.

I use Wristclean every month or so and once a year (carefully) remove the bracelet and give it an ultrasonic cleaning to remove dirt from areas that can't be otherwise reached.

If in a difficult area (climbing, hiking, safari...) I just leave it on my wrist in the shower and give it a good cleaning when home.
