OP, by your description it sounds like you made a mistake but since the mistake is already made and the watch is yours you should wear it. Scratches are inevitable, either you scratch it or the next owner will. As others have said, the first scratch hurts the most. The joy of wearing it will offset all the other ones.

Think of it this way...you bought a used watch. Enjoy the damn thing. It's not a Faberge egg. It's a rugged sports watch that was originally designed for people who race cars...and sometimes crash them.

Start racking up life memories while wearing the watch. That way, any ding won't be a ding, but part of your personal history. What is more valuable than that?

When I set out to buy a Rolex I was originally going to keep my budget to around 10k and get an Explorer II or maybe a GMT - something that would be at home with scratches and could be worn daily without much care.

The Daytona is just so pretty and with the polished bracelet and bezel - coupled with paying double what an Explorer II would cost, has me feeling like I made a mistake...

I know in my mind it's just a thing to be worn and used but I hate the thought of it getting too beat up. I'm meticulous with other fun toys like sports cars and such but I feel less in control of keeping this watch in good shape!

Anyone else get this way? Any recommendations?
No! the only mistake is not enjoying your Daytona

If your concern is about theft, then I’d say they are valid in cities like London.

I would wear it only under long-sleeves, perhaps to special events, and be careful travelling the tube as you risk your hand reaching up to hold a rail and there it is on display for everyone to see.

Most people in big cities will not have the wealth that Rolex wearers have and those who don’t respect other’s possessions can spring up from no-where.

I know the joy of my first Rolex and the pain of almost losing it.

In the more recent hodinkee video with John Mayer he goes into what you're feeling a little bit. He talks about how you can buy a watch but sometimes you don't want to wear it. He's says that sometimes you just have to give yourself that watch. You should have a look at that video its a pretty cool perspective. I had to give myself my 5CHNR because I didn't wear it as much as I wanted it to.

I like my cars shiny and immaculate. I drive them hard once they’ve warmed up properly and they’re always properly serviced and any paintwork marks or damage sorted.

Think of a watch the same way - they get used then they need some TLC and maintenance. The reason I’ve come to love watches more than cars is the watches will outlast me. And I get to enjoy them 16 hours a day not 16 hours a month.

Just enjoy the watch.

i used to feel the same when I got in to watches. I used to be very anxious. Now, I have realized that I have bought the watches to enjoy them not to worry about them.

It takes some time but you get used to of it. Just enjoy it and let it scratch. its normal.

Nothing wrong with buying a watch just to look at and not wear. It's the buyer's money and choice what they do with their belongings.

The first good watch is always a problem in this regard.
Especially with so much of everything invested in a trinket on the wrist mentally, emotionally and financially.

You say you look after your gear so i would trust in myself that you will be a good custodian with this watch.
After the first scratch or dent in a well lived and loved life the anxienties around it will start to ease and more so with each new one discovered.
They usually start showing up on the bracelet first around and on the clasp.

The beauty of Rolex ownership is that a proper case refurbish/polish at the Service center when service time eventually comes along will see the watch returned to you in strikingly lovely condition. Basically erasing the visual history of its earlier life, ready to start a whole new chapter in its life story with only the memories you hold as a reminder.
Besides, you may damage your watch doing something especially significant to your life and it will be a gentle reminder.

Don't stress and enjoy your watch to the full

APhound is on to something. Buy another of the same reference, wear one of them and keep the other in pristine condition to admire.

As a few others have recommended, pick up a used AP or Patek. They are of higher quality than your Daytona, so I promise you'll stop babying that Daytona so much. Plus, if used, scratches/wear/tear would have accumulated on the AP/Patek where babying won't be necessary.

Just wear the damn thing and tell yourself it’s all good. It’s a mental block but just get over it by wearing it. And it’ll become easier after the first scratch.

Worst case is you have the watch sit in a safe. For what? If the watch is controlling you it’s not worth the aggravation. Just sell it

Op, wear it and enjoy it , if it gets a scratch, so what that is what it’s for. Obviously take care of it. I wouldn’t have it on while working on an engine or some other heavy chore.

Later when it has enough use and patina have serviced and enjoy it some more!

Cheers

Sounds like you need a 2nd watch. If your Daytona has a white dial get a sub or black dial 16570. If you have the black dial, get a polar Exp II.

This is just a phase, most of us go through when buying your first expensive watch.

At first, get comfortable wearing the watch around your home and practice situational awareness. Whenever I walked down a hallway or through a door, my left wrist involuntarily moves closet to my body. I guess this is from years of being careful with watches.

The best thing you can do, is wear the watch and let life happen to it. There is very little you can do to break it, all scratches can be easily removed if required and even big dents can be laser welded.

Wear it. My 116520 (white) from 2009 went to RSC last year, came back like new. Have again first scratches, but who cares? I will send it again to RSC in a few years and it will come back like new again.

Yes you made one of the biggest mistakes in your life. Open your safe and place the watch in there, never to see the light of day ever. Overthinking about scratches will have you in an early grave.

Put it on the wrist and then try forget it's there. Personally, I wear a BLRO that I'll rarely take off whether spannering the car or working in the garden, I wear it all the time.

Would you think it crazy to hear that it's got a good coverage of marks and I think it looks fantastic; there is something about the marks on a watch you can appreciate when they are marks from your own use and tell your story.

Just wear it.

I would build a bunker under the house and store the safe in which the daytona will remain until death, in this bunker - safest route IMHO!

I'd wear it everyday. If you can't be comfortable with that, I'd get a second watch and save the Daytona for special occasions, nights out etc.
