Well, if indeed it had been real inside, he'd have to replace the exterior components like the bezel, new sapphire crystal, crown, band etc. to make it look like new.
So now it has a happy ending and the watch is going back to its original owner.
What or how are you going to tell her daughter?
"Sad comment - hope she does not think you swap it" like is often mentioned here. That would be very uncomfortable.
Is it possible the owner had not known it is real? Would be battery last that many years?

The OP was being sarcastic imono, it did not contain a battery.

Why does someone think it's fake? Just looks old, to me. If it's hand engraved on the back cover, it may have been the owner's way of protecting it from theft. That was popular once.

I'f run to a watch guy and have a look at the insides. Did this model GMT come with an oyster band? I thought they were jubilees.

I'm not a collector, but if it's authentic Rolex, I'd give $2,000 for it, in a minute. I bet the bracelet has 10 years left in it. The watch and the band will polish up nicely.

It's the real deal....some members like to stir up the pot. Anyway, I cleaned and polished it and it looks great. The bracelet is still wearable but a new one will be needed sometime. I will eventually send it off for service. I appreciate your reply Steve

I'd buy this, especially if it was my friend's. Loads of history
