I usually mention the type of watch, rather than saying just "nice watch..."

By and large, people are receptive and smile...

(could be that it's with some relief that I'm not asking them to hand it over, haha. I know I look thuggy... but it's just my mode of dress)

Happened to me a few times recently. I normally just approach them and say something like "hey, sorry I couldn't help but notice, is that the new GMT in gold? Very nice!". The guy wearing said watch was very receptive and we had a bit of a chat.

The other night I saw a younger guy wearing a bond SMP, to which I said "nice watch, I've got one of them too!"
He looked a bit sheepish, didn't really look at me and said "oh this one? it's an old one".

Each to their own I guess.... but it doesn't bother me. If I feel it's appropriate to comment on it I will.

You are likely right, but I've done some searching and can't find the Panerai chrono model he was wearing.

Anyway, IMO he paid too much for the watches he bought, unless of course he can sell them to people who don't know what they are really worth. Considering most were Rolex he will probably do okay.

I know how you feel. I brought home the newest brietling & tag catalogs the other day & left them on the coffee table. The responses ranged from "Oh no... I knew it was going to be something with watches..." to "what? but how many watches do you own?"

I was in the grocery store early yesterday (1/1/07) morning when I see a guy that looks like he has a pie plate strapped to his wrist. I said "Hey, is that a Paneri?" without even thinking about it. He says "Yes, I bought it in Atlanta" to which I respond, "Nice Watch!" I think the guy was a little embarrassed, but in no way disturbed, and I guess I was a little embarrassed as well. But, I don't think it is a big deal, it was a nice watch, I like watches, and obviously, so did this guy.

I don't put it in the same category as saying to some guy, "Hey, nice pants!"

That's a rather astute observation. It's a little less intimidating I think, than commenting on someone's pantswear.

Oh ok... I just wanted to say 'pantswear'

Hello Folks and Happy New Year

Generally, I don't see many people wearing Rolexes, but when I do I take each situation differently.

If I'm simply walking in town and pass someone, I'd say nothing.

In a queue, then maybe comment depending on the person.

At a party, then probably comment if we are sitting together or strike up a conversation.

At my business, where I am in "control of the situation", then definitely and politely.

I have even offered to buy peoples Rolexes (vintage) at my business! No success of course, all have been sentimental gifts from their parents......damn! (mind you these people were in their 50's-60's and wished to pass down these watches to their kids - fair call).

Two reasons for the Omega, Chris.

First, in case you haven't noticed, I love complications in my watches. This one has everything except memory (which is why I used to collect Casios).

Second, it has the loudest alarm of any watch I've heard. I need a loud alarm when I'm lying on the beach so I'll know when to turn over to keep from burning. It has a great countdown timer. So all I have to do is set the amount of time to count down and when it hits zero, the loud alarm rings which I can hear over the sound of the surf. When I turn over, I just have to start the timer again - no resetting of the time - and away we go.

Hey Ed,

When did you get that ORIS....quite like it!! BTW, have you noticed that the date in the window is not perfectly centralised?

As Al mentioned, I too generally do not comment on someone wearing a Rolex because likely fewer than 1% of Rolex purchasers are WIS or really watch savvy. I only did it once to a guy in Canadian Tire and he was an older guy who had had the watch for some 30 years and was delighted to tell me how it keeps on going and going. Not a WIS by any means, but genuinely thrilled with his purchase, moreso when I told him (a) what he could now sell his 30 year old watch for and (b) how much a new one is.

The father of one of the kids at my daughters daycare wears a mid-size Seamaster and I commented on it (nice Seamaster) and he said thanks. I was wearing the 01 and he asked what it was, didnt know the brand and said sheepishly, that it was nice.

The only other time was a comment made to me (and John and Al) when we had dinner in Greektown in Toronto. Our waiter recognized one of our watches as a Panerai and he said he was thinking of getting one and how he missed the UN he sold a while back.

If someone is wearing a more WIS-savvy brand, I will comment, but otherwise, I wont.

I've had it for at least 3 years. I know about the alignment problem. It's been that way since forever. It's a real PITA to align. That's why I hate 30 and 28 day months and that's why I hardly ever wear it any more. But it wasn't really expensive, so I don't feel too bad about leaving it on the winder most of the time.
