You are correct... I know this is true because I have been in the their gear locker many times.....One more pic of my favorite carry gun... the G36......I will not speak of these evil things again.......hehehe

Shooting is a fantastic hobby/sport to some of us. With all due respect, have you ever tried any shooting other than "qualification" type shooting?

Have you tried shooting oyster crackers off a bosrd with a .22 target pistol at 50 feet? That's fun, but none too easy.... Ever tried blasting a 2 liter cola bottle filled with water at 75-100 yards with a .44 Magnum? Want something that'll really get you hooked? Try Sporting Clays! Skeet and trap are almost as entertaining also.

For some reason, enforcement types are fascinated with shooting at sillouette targets at 7 yards, 9 mm, .40, and .45 auto pistols. Best group I can generally get out of one of those things is 4-6" at 25 yards, whereas a fine magnum revolver or target pistol can do a ragged hole at the same range.

Get an accurate gun and select some reactive target (such as bottles of water or a box of clay targets) and get on a range that is safe for "plinking", then place your targets at a range that they test the limits of man and machine. 5 clays at 50 yards are great. You start on the left, I start on the right, and whoever breaks the one in the center first "wins"!

SSD and I shot recreationally all through college like this. When he decided to go into enforcement, his new buddies were ribbing him on his first trip to a "real range". They even had the gall to poke fun at his Colt Python! I think he shot a 97 his first time and he thought the whole process was a joke!

The whole point of this rambling post is to convince you to try some shooting where the only "rules" relate to safe gun handling. You might be plesantly surprised at how much fun it can be to shoot for fun. If you're ever in the Chattanooga area, I'd be glad to arrange a demonstration!

Yeah, not to mention the ridiculous percentage annual appreciation (in the US) for full-auto weapons. Said to be the best investments - period.

Seattle PD do not walk around with the hammer back. Seattle PD weapons do not have external safety's. That's all I'm saying. But, I am not a local PD, so I'm not an expert.

My only point was that if I was going to take a photo of my weapon it would not be loaded with the hammer back. The 1911 can be made safer if you lower the hammer.

Local SOP's differ. Tacoma may be different.

Mike734,

I thought galleries were for pictures... this is nothing but beating a dead horse.... I tried to explain that removing the pistol from a holster and placing it in a postion for a quick photo and returning the weapon to a safe postion is not a negligent act. Sir, you have missed the point... The 1911 is safer with the hammer back and the safety on... You must not understand the concept of the thumb safety, grip safety and keeping your finger off of the trigger....

This is the preferred method by those that carry this style weapon... It is the approved method according to the "experts". Having spent the past 12 years at Quantico, I have met and know many "experts" from many different agencies (Fed and military) that know far more about the 1911 than you or I ever will ever know... Trust them, it is much safer than you realize. If you only knew how many people have shot themselves with Glocks because of their own STUPIDITY (not keeping their finger off the trigger).

This thread was intended for the fun and amusement for those who appreciate fine weapons and watches.. not to be debated by those who have little of no knowledge of how to safely carry this style pistol. I was hoping that others would see this and post pics of their favorite watch/pistol combo... Like Ed Browns, Wilsons and Colt Pythons...but this thread isn't headed that direction so I'll hope that the mods close this one..... please close this thread....

A 1911 question for you guys . . .

When the hammer is down is it making contact with the firing pin? I know this is a huge safety issue on revolvers, just wondering if the same is true on a 1911. If this is the case one would be stupid to have the hammer down.

I know that on one of my double/single actions that this is an issue so I don't keep that gun loaded at all.

On another topic:

I would never be a part of a anything where I were required to carry a gun but not be allowed to have it ready to fire (IE: no round in the chamber or a single action with hammer down). You make yourself the first target of a badguy because you are carrying a gun, and you just don't have the time to make a gun ready to fire in 90% of all conflicts where you would need one.

Yes the hammer touches the firing pin, BUT, an inertial firing pin does not touch the primer (of a bullet) with the hammer down (Condition Two) and resting against it. In other words, the firing pin is shorter than the firing pin channel and flies forward enough to fire the primer when struck by the hammer. A blow to the hammer resting on an inertial firing pin will not fire the chambered round.

Simply put, it requires the hammer of a 1911 to land full force from the "cocked" position hitting the firing pin to fire a chambered round.

Gotcha, but if there were the slightest gap between the hammer and the case it seems to me that if you hit the hammer hard enough (hit it against a rock . . .) it might could go off?

I feel kind of stupid though, I have had my auto's apart in my hands so many times and I still totally forgot about the inertial firing pin.

Mine came from here.... very satisfied.... This is the manufacturer.... I actually purchased it from a local Class III dealer.... 9 mm is quiet... but the .22 sounds like a pellet gun....

"it sounds so idiotic for a European."

The U.S. has the Second Amendment for a reason. Inalienable rights sir, ever heard of that? Please don't call Americans idiots.

"What happend to your country guys ??"

Nothing happened. We're just carrying out our traditions as Americans. Our rights are important to us.

"No offend but just I'd like to know..."

Don't worry about it. Just a suggestion, please read/understand about who we are as Americans, not what you year in the mainstream media.

Oh yeah, this is a watch forum. Here's a picture

Hi Fear,

I don't think I was agressive when I asked for some more precision, so there was no need to answer agressively.

First of all, I didn't say Americans were idiots, but that the idea of carrying a gun was, that is different.

I'd rather not argue more, I may be wrong whatever I say. Sorry if I offend you.

Cheers / Pierre

I used to be more of a firearm hobbiest, but havent played with them for years.

IIRC, the main reason for the "cocked and locked" carry of the 1911, is simply becuase that weapon does not have a double action first shot. Many of the newer semi-autos can be fired just like a revolver, as long as one round is chambered. You can't do this with the 1911. Meaning, that if you need to draw and fire immediately, cocked and locked, is the way to go with the 1911. With the safety on, accidential discharge becomes a remote chance. Draw, flip the safety, and fire. That's a lot less time consuming, then drawing, chambering a round..etc..etc..

Did I miss something?

Im an English country gent and i have a Gun , firearms are just as important to English culture as Tea and Scones, any British person who denies the fact that British history was the most violent the world has seen! is obviously not aware of Hundred of years of military campaigns the British Isles has raged against any and every nation who is up for a fight! and the utilisation of firearms has been vital in the advancement of our nation, the only problem i have with American is that they spell colour without a U and they put random Z's in-place of S's in words which end 'ise' ha ha!! anyway here are my toys

Fantastic shotguns!! More info please! I shoot a Beretta S687EELL Sporting at clay targets, and I absolutely love it. I'll get hold of a decent camera and post a pic of it soon.
