Always look bigger in photos. 40mm is smallest like.

But it's your watch.

I have a 36mm explorer and am debating this myself. I'm leaning: too small.

Nay, 36 is not too small although it tends to work better with formal wear.
An 1803 is a classic tool from a more civilized era. Timeless and elegant.

Not at all. 36 mm has a wrist presence that stands out

Every time I see one in the wild, it amazes me how fitting it is as a classic, in both size and design.

How about 29mm, then?

Seriously, at the time (WWII) watches such as these were worn by soldiers and airmen with wrists larger than mine (6.75").

Our perceptions of relative sizes are just that -- perceptions -- and can change through time. I will, however, say that a watch is too big for me if the lugs go significantly past the edges of my wrist!

Blue rubber with yellow gold? Well, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, I guess...

I much prefer the original brown vintage-style strap you had on it.

It is no Invicta but I think it fits fine. Unless you are trendy, and need enormous watches.

36 is very nice size, particularly for a dress watch. that watch looks great on your wrist. I have several dress watches from the 60's and 70's of that size on leather straps that look great on a 7.5 inch wrist.

Here are two 36mm watches on my 7.25 inch wrist. I love this size, it keeps watches from becoming too flashy.
I also have several 40 and 42 mm watches. Must say that either 36 (dressy) or 40 (beater) is the best size in my opinion. 42mm is already too much.
