All the Rolexes are over engineered and I doubt many use their "tool" watches for what the application they're meant to be used for with the exception of maybe the GMT and Explorer II. Although I doubt people use the 3rd time zone function on the GMT.

I also have to say, I actually think the YMII looks great in white gold with the silver bezel. Pictures just don't do it justice. You have to wear one/try one on to appreciate it.

You can also reasonably doubt that most people ever use the chronograph function on their Daytonas, if not to see if it still functions. I would use that timer ever freaking day if I had one. I am yearning for any chronograph, let alone a Daytona. I came close to buying the Seiko Honda F1 Chronograph, but didn't really think it was worth the $400 they were asking, even at 35% off U.S. retail.


For the time being, I have to make do with rough timing by use of my bezel.

For me is the old yatchmaster. The bezel size, it's ......... something is weird and not suitable with the watch , that's my point of view. It's depend on personal taste

What is it with you? Do you even what the YM-II was built to do? Do you know anything about the 4160 movement? One goes deeper than any human can withstand, while the other is the first mechanical countdown piece with a memory. It is easy to build a watch that counts up (Daytona), but very hard to make on that counts down, albeit also able to stop and be reset during the countdown. No other mechanical watch can do this. And yes, it may be ugly, but it is certainly no "glorified paper weight or door stopper" by any means. It represents the most innovative complication to come from Rolex in many, many years.

Some products say far more about a brand’s strategy than any amount of executive declarations, in particular when discretion is their forte. In this sense, the Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master II, which Rolex unveiled at BaselWorld, will undoubtedly be seen as turning a new corner.

Let’s start with the product: the Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master II regatta chronograph is the first watch to have a programmable countdown feature with a mechanical memory. The countdown can be programmed for 0 to 10 minutes. In the company’s own words, "This new horological complication is heir to all of Rolex’s watchmaking know-how and benefits from the vertical integration carried out by the company over the last 10 years. A unique interaction between the movement, the case and the bezel makes the Yacht-Master II a completely new creation, a new-generation watch." It is equipped with the new 4160 movement, entirely designed and manufactured by Rolex and whose 360 components include a blue PARACHROM® balance-spring with a Breguet overcoil, up to ten times more shock-resistant and unaffected by magnetic fields.

The first thing this launch tells us is Rolex’s determination to move into the world of complications, a word which the Genevan Manufacture, despite being renowned for its chronographs, had until now banished from its vocabulary. Such a clear signal implies that Rolex intends extending its scope over the coming years, rather than to go on allowing its competitors the monopoly on complications. While no-one at Rolex would put it so bluntly, an outside observer will understand that the Genevan firm is getting tired of hearing rival brands make a lot of fuss over - sometimes - very little.

A philosophy of quality and reliability

Until now, Rolex has refused to talk about "complications" because the term was associated with noble, but often fragile, functions and this runs counter to the philosophy of quality and reliability advocated by the brand. Hence the company is going to great lengths to explain that the new Yacht-Master II complies with the same quality standards as the rest of its production. The 35,000 hours of research and development that went into this regatta watch are the first guarantee.

Another important lesson is the interaction between the Ring Command bezel and the movement to programme the countdown function. That the first complication from Rolex should incorporate this dual element certainly isn’t by chance. Rather it is an elegant way of reminding the world of the high level of vertical integration at the firm. While many of the firms laying claim to the title "Manufacture" over recent years produce only the movement, Rolex steps in to remind us that the capacity to manufacture external elements is no less essential.

A special relationship with the sea

Finally, by unveiling this model just a few days before the Louis Vuitton Cup, the prelude to the America’s Cup with its impressive line-up of watch brands, Rolex makes clear its long-standing association with the yachting world. In its own words, the Yacht-Master II "is born of the longstanding relationship that Rolex enjoys with the sea, sailing and the mysteries of the deep. It perpetuates the supremacy of the Oyster, designed to resist water and conquer the elements."

Clearly then, the Oyster Perpetual Yacht-Master II regatta chronograph marks the beginning of a new era at Rolex. More reactive, more dynamic, more communicative, more complicated, but always measuring up to the same standards of reliability that have helped build the Genevan giant’s reputation. ■

Although I do long to be vertically integrated, I do not love the C/Master but really my least favorite is the date-just with a jubilee band. I don't know why I just don't like the J-band. I really like the explorer 1 and I like the date just sans Jubilee bracelet - to me the jubilee is just to glitzy.
