If someone famous (think Newman, McQueen) wears one consistently for many years, that would help. Question is.....who could carry that torch today? Clooney? Pitt? Tom Hanks?

If you want to collect it, then do so.

Everything goes up in value if you hold it long enough

Will Rolex Daytona Platinum be a future collectible and go up in value?

^^^Excellent point.

I would add that the intrinsic cost of metal is itself very disproportionate to the MSRP of these watches. All metal prices fluctuate, but rarely does this correlate with pricing of the watches.

Platinum watches generally command an additional premium in part because they are produced in smaller numbers, and in part because the manufacturing process is more difficult given the higher density of the metal.

I won't attempt to comment on collectablity/desirability of the particular Rolex in question except to say that the added heft of platinum is for many a definite advantage over either stainless or gold.

Please see my comments above. Fluctuations in metal pricing should have minimal effect on future value of the platinum Daytona, unless of course one plans to melt it for scrap.

Not in the next decade or two. Maybe 40 years from now.

I don't see any modern Rolex to be collectible as the vintage pieces we see today, not even SS Daytona, which may be the hardest Rolex to get right now. It's like considering a 911 Turbo collectible, will it stand the test of time? Yes, will the price double in the future? Doubt it.

Seems nearly almost unanimous that a majority agrees somewhat.

I concur.

It depends how you define value. Will your one month Caribian cruise hold value? Do wedding rings hold value?

If you think it moneywise, then no, it wont’t hold value. I ordered platinum Rolex because i got imediately addicted to heft of it. It feels like no other. And after all i think life is about nice feelings and happy times. Of course money can be collected until death as well.

If for example electric or hydrogen cars need more platinum with production in the future, then price of platinum might triple. We have to remember that amount of platinum is very small in whole world, all it needs is some serious bumb. But in next 10 years it is hard to see what would bring price of platinum up up up.

No one buys a platinum watch as a metals commodity play, but when those price of gold vs. price of platinum comments start, it is worth noting that because platinum is more dense than gold, there are more ounces of platinum in a given watch than gold. Even forgetting about the 75% gold content vs. the 95% platinum content.

But none of that has much to do with whether a platinum Daytona will be collectible.

FWIW, I never plan on selling mine, but I guess it would be cool if they discontinued or changed it, and it became more collectible. But probably the only effect that would have on me would be to increase my insurance cost.

I'd pass on the doc's (no offense intended, just not a Daytona fan) but Padi's diver? That's one worth a look. Proceeds going to charity, of course.

I'd be very surprised if it went up in value. It's something that very few can afford but, for those that can afford it, it's not exactly hard to get hold of one.

The version with diamond bezel and diamond dial might have a shot in like 20yrs in an auction setting where they feature like 10-20 of the factory stone edition watches or casino watches as I like to call them. Msrp was like $155k. Just cross your fingers and hope someone bids it up to the moon after a few too many martinis.

Best bet is not to buy it retail plus tax. It can be had for about 54 new from a trusted seller.

I believe the platinum with baguettes is about $81k MSRP vs. $75k for regular one.

I believe you are correct but the version I was referring to in my post was this glacial rather icy Platinum Daytona which retails at 155k

Ah, I gotcha. I try to block that one out of my mind and pretend it doesn't exist. (Sorry Floyd Merriweather, I'm sure you have several.)

Rolex Daytona Rainbow, short production, very rare and worth well over MSRP if you can even find one.

My sales guy coaxed me into trying one on a few weeks back - apparently it's been sitting in their showcases since 2014:

I don't think Platinum Daytona 116506 would be as desirable as Rolex Daytona 116500 LN. Platinum is only for the few who knows the best and with deep account
