I practice a lot of awareness of my surroundings when I travel but I'd obviously like to avoid getting it stolen off my wrist (which is why I don't think the DD40 is a good idea) or any unnecessary conflict. I also don't have watch insurance. However, I wore the DJ36 to Italy around 4 years ago with no issues so I don't see it being very problematic.

I'm considering putting the DJ41 on a white everest strap. Let me know what you guys think!
If you have to ask, a gshock sounds like what you need.

Go all in and wear what you want. Last year in Italy I took my VC Overseas and AP ROO and nobody even notices. Go have a great time.

I say don't bring a watch if you need to be wrist-conscious with it. But between all of them DJ seems to fit the most (functionality wise).

You are there for the vacation, don't worry about the watch on the wrist.

Unless I’m in a resort area I travel with an Explorer or Speedmaster on a NATO.

Born and raised in Milan, Italy. Love my country but these days, it is not what it used to be. I travel watch free or wear my Seiko turtle.

I am from Milano, Italy. I would wear the SS datejust. Only place where not to wear it is Napoli city. Rome needs extra safety and check surroundings but should be ok.
To be honest I also would wear the others but as you do not speak the language or know the places I would go with a plain datejust.
Enjoy our nice country.

To be honest, I find the way you mention “I am going to Italy” a bit not appropriate. The problem is not the country itself, but the fact you are going as a tourist in a country with a lot of highly populated cities, most of them full of tourists (or at least this was the norm before COVID…) and, as any other big/highly populated city you need to be careful. Whatever you will decide to wear, I would make the same choice for the UK, France, Germany, Greece, Spain,…
A part form that, enjoy Italy and your watch/es :)

I think it depends on the areas you go to.

Train stations are a no no in italy. they spot you.

But if you are in nice hotels/stores and boutiques locals are stylish. But it seem you are just walking around and summer adventure, so take a simple not expensive watch. save the best watch in safe if good hotels and wear only for safer situations.

Some times if you are dress down and no style they might perceive you as american tourist = target. If you are stylish or dressed up = money = target.

careful with your bags and handbags unattended - and wallets . They are experts!

But I travel with one good watch, but i do wear mostly long sleeves and in summer roiled them up but use to hide wrist if questionable areas… or spot suspicious people.

Hopefully watch insured, but you have file report. a hassle.

so it’s not that different than a large City USA, but They KNOW you are a tourist

i travel often for business. Lots of good anecdotes of safety above.

But i would bring a g-shock or apple watch and enjoy yourself in that wonderful country.

As a European, the same can be said of many other cities, Paris, London. I would not travel will a nice watch. Seiko, or Casio. Sad? Yes, but less so than risking being even sadder.

Traveling to Italy

I disagree with those who says to wear low key seiko or apple watches.

Disclaimer: if you get the same enjoyment from them then sure by all means.

I myself prefer to enjoy my rolexes. I have worn various luxury watches all over the world without issues. A sub is pretty low key and so is a GMT. Many parts of the world doesn’t even know what a nautilus or RO is.

I enjoy making memories visiting places with my sub (and now GMT). I wouldn’t have remembered saving a girl off the coast of Mexico wearing my SD or having a shark bite my sub in the Bahamas. I’ve climbed up and down Nusa Penida Bali in my hulk and taken hot air balloon rides over Cappadocia Turkey.

Stop stressing and wear your watches and make memories with them. I’d rather remember swimming in the ocean of Italy with my sub than an Apple Watch (nothing wrong with them I have one for exercising).

Just choose wisely. Don’t wear a gold one every day, leave it for one or two nice dinners. The rest of the time wear a low key tool watch (sub/gmt).

Traveling to Italy

I go every end of year to Milan on the way to the slopes… always wear my Explorer II. Never a problem.

Go enjoy yourself.

If you see a possible thief just start coughing uncontrollably and very loud.

Italy is the only place in the world I have had something stolen right off of me & I've been all over, including places like Rio..

Random 'scuffle' scene created out of nowhere by a couple of guys selling stuff on the street. Later at night but with a ton of people around. Didn't notice anything gone until I got in the shower in the am. Their execution was incredible - experts at their 'craft'. Just some perspective...

I spotted a LOT of Rolex watches when I went through Italy in 2017. Several Daytona's in Venice, sat behind a guy with a black DSSD on the boat from Venice to Lido, several Day Dates in Florence and a complete beauty coming off a yacht near Sorrento and the Hulk on her wrist was nice too, but our service at the restaurant went downhill quickly when she was sat near us, most of the staff rushed out to meet her yacht tender at the dock

I did have someone try to pick pocket me in St Marks Square but he went for the wallet, I wore my Pelagos and no one gave it a second look. He created a very good distraction with bird seed and a flock of hungry pigeons.

I'd wear my insured Deep Sea if I get to go again.

=======================

I wore my Batman for a week in Florence a few years back and had a stranger compliment my watch by saying something like “nice watch - is it new?”

It really made me paranoid for the rest of the day so now I’d recommend wearing one you wouldn’t mind having stolen when overseas...

If by any chance you are traveling to lake Como, PM me, one of the best restaurants in the world is in Tremezzo...northern Italy is beautiful, and this is great time of year to go. Safe travels.

If that's the case wear the most waterproof watch and don't do a James Gandolfini when you're there and you should be fine.

I'm a passionate cyclist. I travel to the Alps and Dolomites in Northern Italy almost annually with a bike in tow. Every trip has been with my GMT strapped on. Northern Italy is so safe you'll feel silly asking this question. Wear your Rolex everywhere and enjoy the trip!

None of them! Far too dangerous. Now, you have a perfect excuse to buy yourself a Tudor...Black Bay 58, your choice of blue or black dial, 39mm. The perfect "under the radar" answer to the Rolex owner who gets nauseous at the thought of wearing anything not Swiss, like a Seiko or what have you...

(You've had plenty of serious responses, so I had to joke a little bit)

Poor attempts at humor aside, of your collection, I'd go with the DJ 41mm, simply because it's a great all around kind of watch. As with anyplace, try not to project "lost tourist" and watch out for teens on motorbikes. As I recall, they were artists at lifting purses from the ladies on the fly...though I doubt they could get that Rolex off your wrist while in motion!

Safe travels!

Wear anything you like. You'd be surprise Rolex is common over there.

It's all about health, happiness & family. The rest are just necessary inconveniences we have to deal with.

I am thinking of getting a Tissot PRX (even in Quartz - for less than $400 I think) for traveling - Swiss watch with a decent steel bracelet and 100m water resistance ... good compromise and less to worry about!
