I am not that hung up on "rules" but I think dress watches generally are expected to have no complications with the possible exception of a seconds hand, and a leather strap.

I disagree on this. I think Rolex has many more than enough models that simply have hours/minutes/seconds that can be used for formal dress watches like daydate and datejust. I really think the Cellini can be dedicated to high horology with perpetual calendar like the A Lange & Sohne.

I like the idea of a date hand. On most watches you see the date shown as a number, but this format I can see the number but get a visual snap shot of what fraction of the month is remaining. Just by glancing at the watch.

I am VERY fond of Cellini and will be an owner someday. I really dont get the luke warm reception from the masses.

That moonphase GMT is to die for

Cellini’s time is still coming…soon there will be time when they will also become an unobtainium.

Cellini’s are gorgeous! I have Caltrava’s and other “dress” pieces and this Time Only is my favorite, by far! You need to see/wear to appreciate. Perfect balance and presence. Dial lay out is genius. So underrated. This site is all about SS tool/sport hype
watches. You won’t get any love for dress watches let alone Cellini’s here. Go try one on.

I must be honest but I never get all the assertions that there are always "X number of other dress watches to have before a Cellini". A formal dress watch by its very nature is usually very simple with just time only. Most don't have a date but it's acceptable, and perhaps even an additional discrete complication like a moonphase. IMO a chronograph or even a perpetual calendar is not remotely a true dress watch, so if we're essentially talking about 3 handers in PM cases on leather straps, I would say that Cellinis are simple, well-made and well-finished dress watches that are not badly priced for what you get.

Obviously yes you have to like the aesthetic, but I personally fail to see what prevents them from being able to stand next to all these other so called "better" options.

I am amazed at how much I have been wearing what I always thought of as an oddball. It wears so well. I am looking to sell a couple of watches simply because between my 114060 and this Cellini, nothing else makes it out of the box.

A Cellini Date, rose gold/silver dial/brown strap is on my short list.

You are not really disagreeing or even responding to anything I said. A day date by definition has more complications than time..it has the day and date.
I made no comment about what Cellini should try to become.

I really like the Cellini line and am considering a dual time.

I understand the dress watch rules of the road, but I actually don’t like how thin some of the alternatives are. Whilst I do not want a thick gold dress watch, I think the Cellinis strike a nice balance of elegant case design, appropriate wrist presence, and beautiful dials.

They can be used as a dress watch as well as a daily.

What’s not to like?

I was literally going to post this! He was also at a bball game years ago (soon after leaving office) wearing a cellini. It looks good on him

I just refuted your comment about a dress watch should be just telling time. I quote you “…I think dress watches are generally expected to have no complications…”. showed you an example of A Lange & Sohne, a perpetual calendar that is a dress watch that’s does more than tell time. If your point is not about what cellini should be then you really don’t have a point.

I like the Cellini, but if you want a pure dress watch, potential buyers probably think other brands before they think Cellini.

therThe beauty of Cellini is amazing, but brands are also doing a great if not greater job when it comes to leather dress watches.
