To me, the Aquanaut is the opposite of what PP is actually good at, and I'd much prefer a Rolex as a daily.

I actually did that move myk7000. I sold my white dial 116500 and replaced it with a 5164a.
My train of thought was:
1. I have the possibility to buy one of my grails from my AD.
2. A Daytona I can get again, almost at any time. The 5164a was here now.
3. The financial gain from selling my 116500 was substantial.
4. Get the damn watch!

I must say that even thou I miss my Daytona, the joy of carrying that 5164 is so much higher. I just love that watch.

Exactly. Owning a 50k or 60k watch seems a stretch if one can't easily afford or justify it w/o selling a 20k watch. I'd wait until I could easily swing both. Even more so if I was afraid I'd miss the 20k watch. If the Daytona doesn't get any wrist time once I owned both I'll be a happy seller but not before.

Absolutely. The Aquanaut hype is the single most baffling thing about the last few years in watches.

The Rolex Daytona is a fantastic representation of the best of Rolex; the Aquanaut is a quirky and idiosyncratic part of the Patek lineup. Keep the Daytona if “both” is not an option.

I can’t imagine giving up iconic stainless Daytona PLUS $25grand for a simple run off the mill aquanaut.
Its laughable

Re-original subject, after adding Pp Calatrava and Nautilus to my non-Rolex collection,, I found myself yearning for a date just for a daily. There is a robust'ness that Rolex just carries. The water resistance along with the reliability of a Rolex is just hard to beat. I now wear my DJ 36 more than my Pp but not to say I like it more than Patek's, they just have different roles in my humble collection.

This, and while I am biased as the Daytona is a grail (and was before the hype), the Daytona is arguably the marquee sport model.

I recently “shed” several Rolex in favor of an Aquanaut 5167 and am very happy with the decision. Maybe I was Rolex-ed out. I owned a 5164 when they were first released and am a big fan. One thing to keep in mind between the 5065 and 5164 is the thickness, the 5065 is very thin and wears a lot more comfortably.

Good luck with your decision!

If it were me, I’d do the trade and add another SS Rolex down the line. Love the Aquanaut. Prefer the 5065 to the 5164.

In a way it’s a nice problem to have, either way you will end up with a stunning watch… but I find it hard to believe that you won’t really miss the Daytona, especially if it smiles at you… I would probably keep the Daytona because it is just one of those special pieces that never gets old and never stops feeling good on the wrist.

I'm doing this right now. Just sold my platinum 5 digit day date and am in the process of selling one more for an aquanaut

That’s too bad. The DD is a better watch than the Aquanaut in every respect.

I could never rationally justify to myself doing that but you have other DDs so I can understand the change of scenery needed.

I love my aquanaut, however I also love my Rolex's, I think its cool to have both to switch it up, and if I had to d a 1-1 in and out, id do it for the Patek. And If I only had the Patek I would be more hesitant trading it out for a Rolex, depending on the trade and value of it.

I used to own 116710BLNR and BLRO as a pair and 116610LN & 16610LV as another pair. I decided to trade in the 116710BLNR and 16610LV for 5164A & 5726/1A-014, of course, had to top up quite a bit of cash.

I gotta say even though I do not regret this decision, I do miss those two watches; I of course significantly prefer to wear my Patek's; I still wear my Rolexes during work hours though as they are just much more robust and tough.

Have “traded up” from Rolex AP and Lange for Patek pieces over the years and never regretted it. It is handy to have a sub or GMT to compliment however as something you can just wear and not worry about more as a weekend or hols tool watch.

I would 100% do this trade. Just did something similar myself late last year. 4 watches + a little cash for a 5168G. Haven't missed the Rolex's I gave up for one second.

1,000,000+ Rolex's made per year vs. 60,000 Patek. Enough said

I’ve never gone down the road of higher horology, but something I’ve read here before by many of our senior members who have gone through this process is …..

“I always keep coming back to the crown”

(actually 3 Rolex and 1 IWC)
Yeah started a thread about it and got a lot of crap. haha. But in the end the market value on both sides made sense and I got a grail watch that I love and can't stop wearing.
