I like them both and have mostly matte in my vintage watches but... I do sometimes stare at a glossy black insert and can't help but see the 'mismatch' with a matte dial though... I think a glossy dial can make the watch look more cohesive... but maybe then there is less charm!?

With a modern Rolex with applied white gold markers I think the glossy black is a nice classy look that is super versatile. Love my Sub 126610 as it is and wouldn't change it.

I love a good matte black dial like the older vintage watches with the painted on markers or like modern Pelagos with their applied but non-metal surround markers. My black FXD is a perfect modern matte dial tool watch.

I don't love the matte dial with applied white gold markers and hands though. It's still nice, but for my taste it moves it a little towards the tool watch side of things without going all the way there so it sits in neither camp cleanly. For some though maybe it's the perfect compromise :)

I love in depth feedback like this. Well said!

Matte dial, SEL, holes through the case for the springbar is what I like so I keep my triple 6.

Prefer the Matte.
I have the 114060 and the 116600. The SD4k always gets more wrist time, the dial is one of the reasons.

I had the SD4K when it first came out. I didn't appreciate it at the time....I really regret selling it and will likely reaquire one at a much higher price. As many have said, it's possibly the best modern Rolex.

Always great insight Adam! That is indeed a great looking watch.

Anything with the WG surrounds I lean towards gloss pretty well.

Amazing shot Adam! Some of the best photos I've seen on TRF in this thread. Do you still own this watch? There's something magical about the charm of an aluminum bezel.

Rolex Dive Watches - Matte or Glossy Dial?

I know the AR coating also makes a difference but I much prefer the gloss black dial on my 124270 to the matte dial on the MKII explorer
More contrast / more depth/ more pop IMO.

I suspect my opinion would be the same if I owned both submariners…… the new 41mm sub looks magnificent

..Explorer & Spring Diver - I’m just here for the photos..
