Even as an avid tennis fan seeing the advertising everywhere, I never thought about Rolex until I saw my friend’s black Explorer 2 (16570). A switch was flipped. This very one:

Datejust. As a kid I would stare at them in the AD windows, specifically the jubilee bracelets.

I was always into watches but Rolex appreciation came much later in life. Submariner was my first Rolex. But being a retired Air Force pilot and now commercial pilot I have grown to love GMTs. Divers and aviation watches but especially my BLRO and BLNR!

For me it was my 1978 GMT Master Pepsi which belonged to my dad before it was passed down to me.

116710BLNR, I was in college and a fan of the brand, but that release in 2013 really got me into Rolex in general.

The 16610LV.
I had been looking for a sub as a companion to my DJ - which I guess technically you could say was the initial spark, lol - when the green bezel appeared. Man, I was in love. That spark quickly ignited what some might call passion...or others call addiction. |

Pepsi first, then Sub and Batman. The DD has always been amazing, yet am not really a formal dress kinda dude (except when i have to be 'in costume' for a formal event).

In 1984 when my parents took me to Bailey Banks & Biddle (jewelry store) in Pittsburgh, to buy me a watch to celebrate my prep school graduation … i wanted the Datejust. There were 4 of us (out of my class of 67 students) that received Rolexes for graduation that year. One Sub, one Seadweller 4000, and two Datejusts. At that time, the Datejust and day date were the models most associated with the “look” of Rolex. I wore mine for 24 years as my one and only watch. It went through college, grad school, starting my business, and every activity from 17 - 41 years of my life. In 2007, my interest in watches (and Rolex) was reignited when I saw a picture of the new two tone GMT with ceramic bezel from a member of TimeZone. Since then, I wanted a GMT. I also changed my preference from the Datejust/day date look to the sport styled Rolexes. Previously, I didn’t really care for them. Ironically, I only have sport models now. I have been a Rolex fanboy all my life. I don’t know why, but I just love their designs. Also, I prefer just to have a small collection as I tend to bond with my watches. I am an enthusiast … not a collector. Here are my watches — and I am not looking to add/subtract. I love them as they are. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk |

My passion with Rolex watches was started by the Submariner, and the adverts that Rolex had in magazines in the late 1960's and 1970's. Aside from the quality of the watch itself, it was the way that a sense of adventure came across through the adverts. Oh, and James Bond wore one :)

For me, it was the Milgauss, specifically the white dial. I remember when I first got into this crazy hobby I wondered why Rolex was so special and looked through their catalog; I was in high school at the time so I had a Casio budget haha. The Sub, GMT, and Daytona are all great but I felt they were a little boring, but when I saw a Milgauss for the first time I was struck by it; it's just so unique and different. Eventually I purchased that white 116400 on my 27th birthday, ten years later!

Believe it or not, I think the YG DD in the early to mid 90's did it for me.

When i was 16 years old i was on vacation with a friend and his famliy. We were in Rotterdam and passed by an AD. That was the first time I saw Rolexes. This was in the time we didn’t have the EURO. I was amazed by the look of the watches and couldn’t believe the prices. I came from a loving but rather poor family. I couldn’t imagine someone paying that for watches. It was more money than i ever saw. I than said to my friend, i will own a Rolex one day.
Years later after i finished my study i created my own company from scratch. Fast forward to 2017 my company was doing really well. I started looking at rolexes. I wanted a daytona. I called the AD with full pride (didn’t know about the rolex demand at the time) and naively asked if they had a daytona in stock because the day for me had come. The AD laughed and said, if you never purchased anything from me before you can never get one from us. Disillusioned i did more research about what the man was saying about demand. I went into the world of demand and prices and started to see how my call must have sounded to the AD SR. First i let my wish go but kept looking at grey sites. After a while i decided to go for a 114060. After 6 months i also purchased the yachtmaster dark rhodium. 4 months later bought the 116500 black dial. All grey because i still couldn’t get an AD to take my order. After those three i sold them all and started buying the batgirl, hulk, bluesy, DSSD, SD43, daytona meteorite from 2004, a ceramic panda daytona and eventually the platona. I also sold all those again and am now really in love with the GMT meteorite. This one is my dailly since january and it almost never leaves my wrist.
