Retirement watch - a few choices

I visited a jeweler friend at his store yesterday for a chain. He's in his '70's.

Always has a different exotic Rolex on.
But yesterday it was a vintage Rolex DD in perfect condition. I asked - you know I would

He said, "This is my father's watch and it feels good to wear it today."

I can't tell you how many times I've heard that - either here on TRF or in person at a GTG.

5712 or 5172. Retirement watch deserves a Patek (if you can afford it).

But 5167 just doesn’t give retirement vibes.

Out of principle, I will never buy grey market ... so would need to get from an AD. I'd be thrilled with the 5968a or 5167/1a as well. Any of them would be beyond amazing for me. We will see :)

If you are set on AD then my vote is really whichever one an AD would sell to you in this day and age, otherwise out of the 4 my vote is definitely 5712a

The only correct answer is the openworked AP. Runner-up is the 5712.

5712 has my vote of the choices presented. If rose gold looks good on you, then I'd get in rose gold. If not, 5712a is absolutely spectacular and an absolute dream on the wrist the couple times I've been lucky enough to try it on.

The 5726 is also nice, but it feels a lot more bulky in comparison. If that's your thing, then go for it. However, I think the 24 hour time on the 5726 that can't be independently adjusted is a little bit of a tease.

Noticeably absent from your list is the 5811g. That would be a hard choice for me between the 5712a and the 5811. I think I'd probably opt for the 5811g. You get the best of both worlds: precious metal (and it is quite hefty!) while still under the radar, and the arguably best blue dial in the business.

With the variety in your post I think the only way to get a correct answer would be with more information. Anything else is just everyone picking their favorite of the bunch. For example I would pick the 5712.

Once retired what will you be doing, traveling a lot? Do you have any specific hobbies? Do you like being in or around water?

5712 is overrated and overhyped - the asymmetry is terrible + a steel watch for retirement is really not the best choice.

Hard to choose between the 5712 and the 5726. Agreed with you on the asymmetry which I really dislike, the 5726 has this going for it.

But having tried on both, surprisingly the 5726 feels thick even though it’s a 12mm watch. The 5712 is silky on the wrist. Also the 5712 movement looks so much better with the micro rotor compared to the 5726. Of course the 5726 has a real complication. Hard to choose

I disagree on steel watch for retirement though. Stee Patek > gold Rolex IMO.

Helpful comments. I love high-end watches that are unique and quirky. And I love thin, light watches. I suspect that the 5712 is perfect for me, if I’m able to get one.

Great selection of watches here, is a difficult choice! The AP is my favourite of the bunch but not an ideal retirement watch IMO, I’d go for the Day-Date or the Nautilus.

Oh wow... drool. The 5172G and the RO Openwork would be my top 2. Which one would depend on which other watches that I had. You are so lucky! Whichever you get will be a winner!!!

I'd also advice you to consider which watch would be the most versatile for you to use in retirement.

The blue Patek is stunning and a leather strap is so comfortable. But I would have a hard time passing on the AP openworks. Enjoy your retirement!!
