Its Personal taste, but I always have in mind that thought if "what if". what if it was available like a datejust ? would you still like it? no date sub was always black ship until it became "hard to get".

No offense taken. I bet if someone would give you a $41,600 Daytona and said if you wear it you could have it free of charge you wouldn’t turn it down...

Because of 41k price tag or because of its looks?

It s all hype.

Now THAT is what you call a bad ass chrono.

At the crazy asking prices of a Daytona SS I would save a bit more for this AP. Kills it out of the water in everyway imo.

initially, i wasn't into chrono watches at all......up until recently, had i have the chance to wear and try it on at a grey dealer

man, did i get hooked, it's such a beautiful piece, and it's on my list as the next piece to acquire......i think people love it because it's a cool sports watch with an interesting heritage/history behind it plus the never-ending popularity with a solid column wheel watch overall

People want what they can't have...at least that's the reason I want one. And its awesome looks also help its popularity I'm guessing.

A date function is very appealing to me so perhaps that’s one significant reason the Daytona doesn’t appeal to me.
IMHO because they are hard to get at retail and bit of mines is bigger than yours or p#n#s envy. The modern Daytona does nothing for me either, great movement but cannot see what all the fuss especially with the ceramic.

Same for me, that's my favourite Daytona reference. I would add though, nowadays chronos with tachy scale/bezel don't do it for me, and Daytona has one. So this is the main reason i'm not into it, even if for some time it was the only Rolex model i showed interest in and thought i would get one, back in the days when all i wanted was a chronograph.

I've always liked chronos on a sports watch, sort of epitomises one to me really, so naturally the Rolex version would be high on my list but only until it got a ceramic bezel did I really want one. Started with the RG model and then later went to the SS.

I have both the black dial and white dial ceramic versions but I have them for the sake of having a more rounded/complete modern collection.

I really don't wear them much as I don't find the dial particularly legible, so quickly glancing down to my wrist to tell the time is a bit of a chore. Things like GMT's and subs are much easier to wear in that respect.

My eyesight isn't terrible but I do wear reading glasses.

I didn't think the AP would qualify as a dinner plate.......I'm looking at the AP Diver but strongly leaning towards the AP RO 15400ST, I just have/had so many Chrono's and have been into into second hands lately....that looks great on your wrist BTW!

There are some things I don’t like about the Daytona (PCL’s,), but it is likely the toughest and most versatile chronograph out there. I have a Navi and speedy pro, and while these are hearty I would never think of taking them in the water. I usually wear my Daytona on vacation and looks great with a sport jacket, polo, or T-shirt and flip flops and can handle anything from diving, hiking, tennis, golf, what ever.

While I also have mixed feelings on mine, I remember when I first saw one. It was in the mid 1990’s and while I was into watches had no real idea of the history or rarity. There was something about the appearance that was unlike other chronos. Perhaps it was the rings and the fact that they were not all solid, or the pure colors of black and white. At that time I had other (albeit cheaper chronos) there was nothing quite like it and I had to have one. I ended up with the two tone with a white dial, only to flip that for the ss model. My only real beef is the PCL’s, which can be addressed easily.

Comes down to personal choice. History and aesthetics. Some people like certain brands, homage watches, microbrands, manual wound, quartz, chronograph and what not. A lot of its popularity is also driven by supply and demand. Rolex also doesn't do LEs like Omega does.

Icon19 I got to thinking...

I, like many of you I did not like Daytona in the beginning. I felt it was on the expensive side and fell into the trend that most thought it was in the small side. I was a SUBMARINER man at that point, even though I had Many PM Subs.

Now, 3 years later, I feel that I have watch-matured and I appreciate how the DAYTONA looks and feels on my wrist.

THE Subs felt fine, it just that the Daytona feels a bit more special, more svelt, more prestigious, and more comfortable, and it slips under the cuff easier.

So, it doesn’t matter to me that it doesn’t have a date or may be a bit hard to tell time, It has History, Recognition, Style and Class...

No way I think it fits perfect. The Daytona isn't meant to wear big. It's a slim, classically proportioned chrono that easily hides under the sleeve for dress or business while still being casual enough in SS to wear on weekends. Here's mine on my 7.5 inch wrist and think it looks great

Same here, not a fan of GMTs and Explorer.
I love the Daytona because I’m a petrol head, kart mechanic and part racing driver.
IMO it looks better than a Speedy.

My main reason is because it feels very comfortable on my wrist and the simplicity of the design. The stainless steel with black dial is understated yet clean all around. I wear mine everyday. My wife gave it to me as a birthday gift 8 years ago so the sentimental value will always be there.
