Exp 36 or 40 - Opinion Needed

I feel that the 36 looks great on my almost 8" wrist.....

Love the 36. I can handle a 40 (I have a GMT) but I find the Explorer is at its best as a 36 size (due to the dial) and it's more interesting having different size watches.

Personally find the 36 looks better on the OP's wrist than the 40.

I switch watches every few days. Today i went from the 16600 to the 114270. The Explorer felt small for about 5 minutes and then it didn't. The 114270 wears a bit larger than the 124270.

Ive been having this debate as well.
In general I rather 40 mm watches (my wrists are 6.8 in)
With the Exp I just feel its meant to be 36 mm.
Im after a 14270 just trying to decide which dial/lume I want and if I want lug holes or not.

If it was for me, I'd go 40. But you should do whatever you want. If you like 36 better, go for it. It's for your enjoyment - not for mine.

I had the same "problem" lol. I felt that the 40 had too much space on the dial and seemed more plain. The 36 has better symmetry to me. I got the 36 and love it. I do have a smaller wrist. I do have a 124060 sub and it feels big to me. It takes a while for me to feel ok wearing it but the 36 seems seamless. JMHO

I think I would be inclined to het the 36mm as you already have the 40mm GMT. I must say I have the same dilemma. The good thing is that you rock both watches really food on your wrist.

Another mark in the 40mm column from me. Both are amazing watches, I was in a similar scenario to you and went 40. Actually, I have a smaller wrist (6.8", but flat and I have a large frame) and the 36 just really did feel too small and the aggressive wrist taper only magnifies that feeling. The 40 is a great watch, purists here rip the dimensions, but that has never seemed to catch my eye. It wears very well and it has not left my wrist in 6 months.

I need to go to and revisit these watches in person and do a side by side.

It’s a choice between an average size case with a large dial and a small sized case with an average size dial.

I got tired of feeling like the dial on my MKII explorer was too large on my 7 inch wrist.
so I bought the 124270.

Never regretted the choice and the smaller explorer gets 75% of wrist time with my 44mm diver on rubber strap getting the rest

MKII / 39mm explorer always feels great out of the box but the “all dial “ look dosnt work for me so it sits unworn these days.

Lucky for you it’s possible to try them both on at AD’s ….. good luck chasing down your preferred explorer

It’s always a little funny to me that watches for men & for my dads generation & his dads for the longest times were of the 34-36mm and were long considered the standard.. now I get that things have changed and we have bigger watch sizes for all who have their own preference. But really with this reference it is just most likely the bracelet that makes you think it’s too small for you. Just my own opinion but I think the 36 looks great on you. It’s a banger of a watch that I think you should give a try and see if it grows on you.

I think a DJ in silver or white on a jubilee would be a better compliment to the BLNR.

Between the two, I'd go AK. I had a 36 Ex and eventually sold it.

Update - I got to try on the 40 Explorer the other day and while I think the fit is great, there just seems to be too much negative space for me. It gives the dial a bit of a plain Jane look that isn’t for me.

Between the 36 and 40, I think the 40 looks great on your wrist but if you find the dial a bit boring or underwhelming I would probably consider a different model. Maybe a Datejust 41?

I prefer the 36 over the 40, but thought the Air-King suited you more somehow. Just looked a bit more masculine in the photo. I say that as a huge fan of the 36mm Explorer.

OP, because you have a fit, thin, and athletic build the 36mm is going to accentuate that. So the 36mm looks great on you.

A 40mm works on a hefty, less defined, wrist and forearm as it covers up some of that.
