I have avoided the Daytona affliction for the most part outside of a short affair with a 16520 white dialed reference a few years back.
Joe's Red PN really stands out to me. Love the vibrant dial. Looks like it should be on a wrist holding the steering wheel of a very fast car👍🏻

Hi Fabio! There are many opinions out there on this dial. One of the most prominent scholars is Pucci Papaleo, who wrote the book "Ultimate Rolex Daytona."

I attach here an excerpt from his book. We believe 16 are in existence and that the dial was manufactured by Singer Co.

What is not known is why they were produced. Some believe as a prototype to show Rolex a potential new variant. Others say they were commissioned by Ferrari for their racing team at the time.

Unfortunately, we'll probably never know 100% for sure.

Thanks Joe. However, what I read in the picture you posted is (translated from my native Italian) that "Rolex never acknowledged the paternity of this extraordinary red dial".

The question to me is to understand if these dials were ever mounted on actual watches or they were just made as prototypes.

So we now have the unique "Verga" green dial, a lemon yellow dial and a few red dials

Hello Fabio! Rolex rarely provides any archival information of its vintage productions. And this dial never appeared in any Rolex catalogue that I am aware of. So it is doubtful they were ever actually sold by Rolex. Singer did confirm that they manufactured the dials, but have offered no additional information beyond that.

Its possible, but we don't know with certainty. Rolex does not provide archival extracts like some other brands do, including AP, Patek and Omega.
