Agreed, but quartz was just a different way of doing a similar thing. I think the difference here is the world is now moving to digital everything. The question is really the timeline.

We know mechanical watches will be relevant in one day and irrelevant in a millennia. It's the middle that's hard to predict.

Not so fast, in the end times after the EMP when all those electronic devices are rendered useless those of us with mechanical means of keeping time will be revered as gods. Electronic devices will be traded as curiosities interesting only to artisans for the salvage value of their glass and vibrantly colored cases.

Long live the mechanicals!

Maybe, maybe not. I mean they mostly irrelevant now. Yeah, sure they tell the time but are mostly wearable art. And that could have a pretty long career arc.

I think that some of the Apple Watch ubiquity will erode in the future due to either more biomechncial implants and/or smart rings. The Oura ring is already out there and can track some health info apparently. If one could get the needed health aspects covered (heart beat, O2 levels, sugar levels, Fall detection, steps per day, etc), in a ring-sized package, would one still “take up wrist space” with a watch?

Likewise, if one has an artificial eye, etc. with full internet access (think Terminator), would one still want an Apple Watch? One might still want jewelry though, and that’s where a watch might still be popular? Just hazarding a guess…

Integrating an Apple Watch into the Rolex clasp

I wear an Apple Watch when I work out, go biking, hiking or occasionally I just wear it like any other watch.

However, for me, it’s pretty easy.

When I’m wearing a Rolex, I’m not wearing an Apple Watch. When I’m wearing an Apple Watch, I’m not wearing a Rolex or any other watch for that matter.

Also, I’m a big fan of the Apple Watch. It’s the #1 selling watch on the planet right now. However, unlike what we saw with the quartz crisis, I don’t think the Apple Watch is any threat at all to Swiss Made mechanical watches. I think there is room for both to thrive in today’s economy, and that’s what we’re seeing.

A lot of guys like me will buy both. We’ll have a Rolex, Omega, Patek, etc., and we’ll have an Apple Watch too…It’s a mistake to assume it’s either one or the other…

This is exactly along the lines of what I was talking about. Very interesting to see, thank you for sharing!

I will most likely end up wearing the Apple watch for exercise, and my sub the rest of the time, since it doesn't seem like there is a commercially available solution to do this with my Rolex.

I appreciate all the spirited replies to this message! Love the passion.

Is that smart enough for a smart watch?
